Video won't play on Mac OS X 10.7.2 with AMC 6.01...

    Hello All:

Video won't play on Mac OS X 10.7.2 with AMC 6.01.26220. I installed the AVCHD AMA 1.1 Mac.zip package so my vids to be imported natively and then imported a few of my .MTS video files they initially worked. Then when I started using the video tutorials from this site (which are great detailed tutorials to learn from):

    http://leaders.creativecow.net/leaders/mcauliffe_kevin/

I imported the same .MTS files and pressed the play button and nothing played. I could FF the .MTS vid file manually and it showed movement. So I don't know what's going on. Here's my system setup:

    Mac OS X 10.7.2

    Dual CPU (Xeon X5690's)

    48GB of RAM

    ATI 6870 2GB GPU

    240 SSD

    2 x 2TB WD Cavier HDs

If there's anything else that I'm missing please let me know thank you. I'm wondering if I set up something wrong in my preferences section to make the videos not play back now but I'm not sure as I'm new to using AMC 6 (since I'm switching from FCP 7). Also, do I need to upgrade and use AMC 6.5? Could that be a possible solution? Thank you for anyone that can help... :-)

Hello PNugg and welcome to the Forum.

Assuming you have an account established at the download center, I suggest you start by downloading and installing the latest patch 6.0.3.1. This is a free maintenance release and fixes many bugs. You'll find it in the Avid Editor Patches link. Remember, on the Mac side, every version, update or patch is treated as a full install, always requiring the uninstallation of the existing version. Also, you no longer need to deactivate your license to do this patch update. MC 6.5 is a paid upgrade, BTW - $500.

You have a good solid OS, so no worries there. I'm running Symphony 6.5 on it and it runs great.

I suggest for your workflow that you use "Link to AMA Volume..." to establish AMA linkage and then immediately transcode to a native Avid resolution and media files. Get out of the AVCHD environment ASAP. Yes, it can take a bit of time up front, but it has proven faster than traditional importing, and gives you the rock solid stability of working in the Avid media management system. AVCHD has always been problematic at best with Media Composer.

Newscutter Nitris DX 9.5.3.5 * Media Composer 5.5.3.6 (At Home on PC running XP Pro) * Symphony 6.5.2.1 (At home on MacBook Pro3,1 running 10.7.2) * Interplay... [view my complete system specs]

Re: Video won't play on Mac OS X 10.7.2 with AMC 6.01...

Thanks Rubin for the help. Well I uninstalled AMC 6.0.1 and then installed AMC 6.0.3.1 and I still ran into the same issue,

Side Note: at least AMC 6.0.3 starts up in a few seconds as oppose to the 4 min needed to start up when using AMC 6.0.1.

Also I tried the Link to AMA Volume and pulled in my .MTS file and still the same problem. BTW, it seems that AVCHD is problematic with almost any app that I've used. Ihave a Canon Vixia HFS-100 cam and have actually tried to make even simpler by pulling the AVCHD folder from my cam into my HD and importing and AMA linking from that folder but still the same problem.

Lastly, I don't know if this is my issue, but when watching these tutorials that Kevin P McAuliffe has done, he did a section on using the Caputure Tool and when I look at that screen I see that Bin: is set on clip (which is where I have it set for the clips), then right below it says Res: and the pull down selection says: Incompatible Format with no other alternative choices to pick from except that one. Now I'm thinking that this is obviously telling me something. Is there a way to correct that, because I even tried a .mov file (imported and AMA'd the volume) and still it's saying the same thing - Incompatible Format. Do I need to reformat my settings and if so where would be the best place on the app to make that happen?

EDIT: I wanted to add something here in this post. I noticed this link when I was googling more info on the topic of my issue and found this:

    http://www.pavtube.com/mts-converter-mac/

Here's another one that I see is more specific to the MTX (.MTS) type file converters for specific apps like AMC:

    http://www.pavtube.com/guide/convert-canon-mxf-to-avid-dnxhd-with-avid-mxf-***.html

Now I know about Pavtube (and about a dozen other like/kind companies out there) and see this quite a bit throughout my searches, but the whole reason why I want to leave FCP 7 was because of the same issue when it came to importing my .MTS files. What's still werid is that when I initlally opened that file in AMC 6.0.1 it worked and played the .MTS natively right from the camera. Again, I don't understand why it would not work now. If this is going to continue being an issue no matter what video editing app that I use, then obviously it's the video format. In that case what Hi-Def cam should I be using to make things work natively that is along the same quality and price range ($850) of my Canon Vixia HFS-100 to use in AMC 6.0.3 (and 6.5 when I upgrade)? Because I thought that the cam that I'm using now was great one? Again, thanks for your time and help in answering all these questions the best that you can...
