    MPEG file not supported

    Hello,

I wonder if anybody can give some guidance with unsupported MPEG files from a Sony consumer SD camcorder.

When I try and import into MC it says the format is not supported, not a problem I thought as I have the Adobe Media Encoder, so I encoded as MXF files DV 420 edited a short (thankfully) film and put it out to DVD via Sorensen Squeeze and it looks awful in as much as there is terrible strobing on anything that moves.

Once I realised this I thought maybe I'd got the Adobe Media Encoder Settings wrong so I tried converting to plain old AVI DV and tested that and it was just as bad if not worse.  I've checked and it's definitely a PAL camcorder as I thought it may have been an NTSC model.

Premiere CS5 loads them without problem but I really don't fancy stumbling through the interface and would prefer to convert them for use in MC.

GSpot shows the source files to be DVD "VOB" format with a Sys Bitrate of 10080 kb/s VBRusing the MPEG2 Codec,

Oh and the source files crash Sorenson v7 too!

    Thanks in advance,

    Dean

OK, I think I may have posted a little prematurely! Here is another bit of info.

I noticed (which I obviously didn't the first 3 times) that the Adobe Media Encoder shows that the Sony MPEG source is Upper Field and PAL defaults to Lower so I used the Matrox DV codec as that allows the changing of the field order and what quietly confident that I'd solved it, but sadly after testing it's still the same.Sad

I'm getting very close to making it progressive.

    Re: MPEG file not supported

Hi Dean, some settings for you that should work.

Codec to be converted to could be Avid DV 50 or 1 : 1 , both are UFF.

About your Squeeze crash I guess that you have ran into an Apple bug when applications crashes when encoding mov files to disks larger than 1 TB, I have seen it also happen with Camtasia.

Whatever app you use for your transcode to that codec be sure that you have selected 601 as level and use that setting also when importing into MC , check that the import box says " fast import "

edited ..   considering some old field setting bugs with the Pal SD 1 : 1 codec DV 50 might be the codec that you want to transcode to

    Thanks for the reply Tomas.

I'll experiment with this when I get some time but I went with the progressive route via video mixdown and timewarp applied as the film will be played from an iPad and DVD rarely.

    Thanks again,

    Dean
