Meet our re-Tweeting superheroes from AES - Pro Tools 9 winner Steve Beck

AES was an amazing experience. The launch of Pro Tools 9 was universally acclaimed and the news spread around the world within minutes of our announcement. Central to that information blitz were the folks re-tweeting our news, who were competing for a chance to win a copy of Pro Tools. Tens of thousands of tweets and re-tweets later, we announced the winners of our contest: @Fiya_Juan, @Omnilimbo, @Raygproductions and @Onlinerock.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll introduce you to the individuals behind the Avid re-Tweets—who they are, what they’re working on and how they’re looking to use Pro Tools 9. With that, we’d like to introduce you to our first contest winner: Steve Beck.

Steve Beck is the founder of, an interactive online music community and the co-founder of Needle, a San Francisco-and Bishop, Calif.—based slow-core band. Beck founded in 1999 to deliver marketing and sales tools and services to independent musicians that enable easy website creation, facilitate interaction with other industry professionals, and provide a sales platform to promote their digital music.

Needle’s self-produced debut CD, Songs Your Mother Never Sang You, blends Beck's minimalist arrangements with singer/keyboardist Julie Cornett's fragile, lullaby vocals, and features acoustic and electric guitars, analog synthesizers, old time pianos, toy xylophones and a cocktail drum set. Beck strove for complete honesty in the recordings, keeping early takes marked by inspiration whenever possible.

“I self recorded everything on the Needle record with an [Avid] 003 Rack and a Sebatron preamp,” says Beck. “There are so many more things in place now to help musicians record, produce and distribute their music themselves, but there are also so many more people taking this self-produced route that it makes it that much harder to stand out. And that’s what was designed to do—help musicians market themselves.”

“As a long time Pro Tools’ user, I was really looking forward to checking out PT9.  So much, in fact, that I bought a new Mac Pro. We’re just getting started on Needle’s second release the timing couldn’t be more perfect,” says Beck.
Needle’s debut, Songs Your Mother Never Sang You, has been featured on NPR, and is available on iTunes, and CDBaby.

Congratulations and thanks to Steve Beck for sharing his story with us.
