I am considering buying myself a new HD camera and copy of media composer. There is a particular camera that I am interested in but it is a hard disk based camera - I am used to tape and slightly daunted at the thought of spending hours rendering rushes to import them into media composer.

So the camera is a Canon LEGRIA HF S11. I have contacted cannon to ask what file format it shoots and they have said " the video signal is recorded using MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression and the audio signal is recorded in Dolby Digital."

Does anyone know whether I will be able to import this media directly into the avid or will I end up having to transcode everything? I am used to tape workflows and would normally recoil in horror at the idea of shooting data files but I really like the pictures on this camera.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Whenever I play anything the audio plays but the Video stays on whatever frame its in in the timeline. I can move the video manually so all the video is there.

I have tried importing and recapturing files to see if it is the files, but still no luck. I have tried important 2 jpegs and putting them on the timeline, but still no luck.

I've just upgraded to windows 7 (64bit) and installed Media composer 3.5

I have a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500 installed with a 169.47 and Version 7.5.5 of quicktime.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers for these

I have tried the video display settings on both my graphics card and software OpenGL

I have tried turning on and off the legacy overlay feature

This problem has been driving me mad for ages if anyone has any ideas please please help!

thanks

(This is my fist entry)

I'm working on a 30i NTSC Project in Media Composer v3.1.2 and i'd like to export a 24fps TIFF sequence of a 30" tv ad.

When i chose to Export the video as Graphic… it didn't give me any option about framerate… am i being a fool? because maybe what really matters is how they gonna import this file… not how i export it… (the main objective is to transfer the video to film).

Please somebody help me with this one…

Thanks in advance!

significant quality loss after import

Here's my situation: I need to edit a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation with an existing clip already in Avid.

I screen captured the PowerPoint presentation to BlackMagic 8-bit 4:2:2 Quicktime. Encoded said file using AfterEffects to Avid DV 25 411 @ 720x480. Resulting file looks good and plays back smoothly in QuickTime. Upon importing to Avid (30i project @ DV 25 411) the resolution on the imported footage looks terrible - rough around the edges and the small text is impossible to read. Exported a reference file and it looks just as bad, so however Avid is importing these files is ruining them (and I've tried a ton, from DNxHD and beyond).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much for your reply (really detailed too which is just what I need:)

Unfortunately it still isn't working! The bottom half of the Capture tool is working in sync, so to speak, with my miniDV cam but the top half isn't. So I can mark in and out points on my tape, and play and pause my tape from the capture tool, but when I try to capture I get a message saying:

"Exception: No tracks have been chosen. Please select at least at least one track."

At the top of the Capture tool it says "Video: Host-1394" "Audio: Host-1394". The are no other options on the Video tab but under the Audio tab it also says Windows Mixer but it's greyed out and can't be selected.

Any clues? I am still.... clueless :'(

i've got a problem that i need some help with.

i am currently using avid to create a database of video. this is what i need to happen but i don't know if it can.

capture video

store the capture

if possible preview the footage, as you would an mpeg in windows media player.

import the capture into different projects.

i need to know if i can capture footage with avid and use it in a number of different projects so i don't have to recapture all the time.

any help will be much appreciated, thank you :)

Hide video not working.

Ok, so yesterday i created my user profile on the new avid Nitris DX system our company got a couple of months ago. I work typically with my monitors hidden, only using the client monitor to work, fat timeline style. I have all of my toolsets shortcutted to the keyboard, and only use hidden video in my source/record editing toolset. This setup has always worked well for me until this new machine! Now every time i switch between toolsets and return to s/r edit, my monitors are open and overlapping my fat timeline! On top of that, when i do click my timeline hidden, a horzontal line flashes on the control bar, as if something is overlapping, but nothing is, and there is about a second and a half delay before playback begins. Any ideas? This doesn't happen for anyone else who uses the machine, and I repeat, my profile is brand new!
