I wondered if anyone could help with some advice regarding file formats that are compatible with Media Composer.

I have used MiniDV / DVCam for a long time and am now upgrading to an HD alternative. I do not particularly like various aspects of the HDV format so I am looking into going with a file based option rather than tape.

So could anyone tell me what file formats I should be looking for to minimise transocding times, or indeed if there are any formats that can be used without transcoding. I am not too well informed about codecs used in camcorders, I have seen one that shoots H.264 quickimes and another that shoots AVCHD. Any help with this would be most appreciated.

I want to something that will shoot 1080/25P

Re: XDcam yellow-- can you remove highlight in bin?

It is yellow because it needs to be transcoded. Once the clip is transcoded it will not be yellow any longer. You just need to transcode it to the DNxHD codec. Right click the clip and follow the stetps.

Hi,

Apologies if this has been covered here before, but I couldn't find it.

New Nitris DX systems have just been installed at work with Interplay on a Unity network.

I'm using a Sony PDW-F75 deck in FAM mode and trying to import XDCam HD Clips (35mbps,

shot on the f355 cameras), but it's taking forever. Half an hour at times for a two minute clip.

We're in the early stages of testing out the new gear, but it seems like it's importing the XDCam

HD files as HDV 1080i files, and I suspect that's what's adding on the extra time. I just can't figure

out how to fix this problem.

In the Import settings dialogue box, I've got everything set to use the XDCam HD 35mbps codec, except

for under the Capture Tab, where "Incompatible Format" is grayed out, which won't allow me to select anything.

I'm working in a 1080i/59.94 project with a 1440x1080 raster size. I've tried dragging clips from the "Clip"

folder on the XDCam directly into the bin, and I've also tried using the Import dialogue box and double checking that my settings are correct.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Ideally I'd like it to import the XDCam HD codec natively,

which is what I thought it did in FAM mode anyways (disregarding the import settings and simply grabbing

the clips in their native format).

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long-winded post.

Symphony Nitris p2 workflow (NO DX upgrade)

My facility currently has two Avid Symphony Nirtis's. We will be upgrading
to media composer DX in the near future but haven't yet. A short project
has been brought in that was shot on P2. My question is what is the appropriate
workflow to work with this format on a Symphony Nitris? I believe it can
be done if we transcode but my online editor and engineer are arguing whether
it's possible to do it without the DX upgrade. Please help!

My only issue is that I've noticed the way in which clips are ordered after importing that some files are not imported for some reason.

Once in avid the way it numbers them is continuous but when I go back and view on the sd card in the caemra there are scenes on camera that don't show up on the computer. Or sometimes they are numbered differently and in different places. which is scary when thinking that you must delete the SD card files to ahve room to video stuff. If you are assuming you have transcoding all and there are a few that have not made it you are in trouble.

So does anyone have any suggestions for how to be more shure scenes are not skipped over or why this might be happening? AGain I just put the SD card from my panasonic HDAVC camera into the computer, use the panasonic software to convert, and import p2 clips into bin, select to load media so they won't go offline later,

This is important because in the old 1080p/23.976 project type, you would be able to easily mix shots from other formats like XDCAM & HDCAM.

But if there's a NEW project type called 1080p/23.976 HDV, then how do you transcode & import the clips to a 1080p/23.976 project?

Anybody know this stuff?

XDCAM HD 50Mb/s system specs + pathway

I am about to begin a project which is being shot at 1080p29.97 XDCAM HD 50, and am becoming concerned about our systems ability to handle editing the format.

I was wonderinig if anyone had any recommendations as to desirable system specs and setup.

It will be edited on a Mac Pro Dual Core 2.66 Xeon with 4Gb of ram and a composite Mojo. A Quad PPC 2.5 is also a possibility.

In terms of SW I had in mind MC 3.0.5, OSX 10.5.4 and QT 7.4.5 (as recommended in the MC readme)

Finally, although is suspect it is of no consequence, the footage will be stored on Editshare shared storage, and distributed via a 10Gbe router but using the gigabit ethernet port on the mac.

With the test footage I have been given, I havent been overwhelmed by the performance of this machine. Short of buying a new 8core MP, what options do I have to optimise performance. More RAM? Should I be using 10.4.11? Does cutting in 30i (so that the comp mojo displays) have a performance hit? How much does the GPU impact on performance? Also re. RAM, I'm of the understanding that having 2x2GB is preferable to having 4x1GB. Seeing as the latter is the case at present, how susbstantial is the upgrade.

The other thing that is a possibililty is to transcode via AMA in MC3.5 to DNxHD 145, the rationale being that DNxHD felt as though it were less demanding on the machine, although the increase in data rate is an unfortunate sacrifice to have to make, along with greater ingest times.

One final query I have is regarding advice in the XDCAM pathway guide on the avid site. It suggests that if heavy graphics work is to be done on the footage, transcoding to DNxHD is advisable as it stands up better. At what point do people think this really applies, as there will be a reasonable amount of GFX work done on this.

Any help would be appreciated, and apologies for the rather broad and vast number of questions.

Thanks!

I'm using metafuze on my PC 8core whith the good spec for the
machine and RED ONE camera rushes, and with an official avid version.

I just wonder WHEN this Metafuze 1.3 or Metafuze 2

will show up and be released.

I noticed several huge problems using it,

concerning for example the mass operations, it's ridiculously a lost of time with the actual version of metafuze

Please implement the program with a few code lines, so I won't have to set HUNDREDS OF TIMES

the resolution output I need, and the project name, and the debayer mode and so on.

An 8 year old child would have thought about that. Could you also
give us the possibility NOT TO LOAD the pictures of the preview while
selecting several rushes ? Because I lose a precious time also.

Plus, I often find my metafuze stucked without a reason, and it
happens especially when I plan to go out to do something else while
transcoding. PLEASE DO SOMETHING, because it's a real shame FOR MONTHS.
I'm even wondering if the apple and quicktime consortium are doing a
conspiracy in order to kill the RED ONE workflow. So this should maybe
end up in a court ? I'd do that if I had a lot of money.

I noticed that I had to switch from an application to an other (avid mojo MC 3.5, and metafuze 2.0)

in order to avoid this metafuze stucking problem.

Oh, and another thing is that there is always a problem on relinking the last transcoded rush.

I found a technique, is that I have to throw to the trash the last
created MXF, go back in Avid, Refresh media database, and restore the
trash, and go back to avid, and try to relink. If it doesnt' work,
sometime, I find using The avid Media tool that the rush was already
detected. It's a pity.

Thanks a lot for reading this, and please be professionnal and show
up this 1.3 or 2 or whatever the next version will be called. Sorry I'm
sooooo pissed of, but Avid deserve it.

It is the HD that is hanging us up, and video mixdowns are the best workarounds I've found. The transcoding is unfortunately inept at identifying material that needs it, or for that matter what it has already transcoded. I'm guessing this is not an issue with the Nitris system, but I'm not in much of a mood to dump any more money into my Avid systems. There's too long a list of issues Avid will never fix, and I'm sure this is another one of them. All I can do is sweat it out, unless anyone has any suggestions. -ph!
