There are 2 clips that are over an hour long, when I try and load these clips into the source monitor or into a sequence I get the following error message:

Exception: MXF Mapper:: ReadRange - Index Table Set Key not found at expected offset.

The avid will quite happily play the clips that are a few minutes in length but it won't play clips with a long duration.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Re: XDCAM EX what resolution?

Close but not quite - Using the Avid AAF method from ClipBrowser you get two specific output for each clip - the first is a set of OP Atom MXF files that Avid can read natively, the second in an AAF file that contains no essence, only the metadata.

You need to set the OPAtom folder to be one of Avid's MediaFiles directories (eg. Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1) because that is where ClipBrowser will put the MXF media files, and Avid will scan and index them in that directory.

Then you need to save the AAF files somewhere, but not in that MXF directory - I'd choose to put them in a folder in the Documents directory, or on the Desktop, or something like that.

Once you import the AAF files, assuming the MXF files have been put in the right place and indexed, then they will link to that media. You will have a sequence and a clip for each EX clip, you can delete the sequences, they simply act as a holder for the clips.

However, it's very important to note that if you lose the media you have created (ie. the Avid Media is deleted) you cannot relink, even if you follow exactly the same procedure to convert the clips again.

I wrote a more detailed article about this on my website: XDCAM EX Workflow in Avid

Re: Sony EX 1

Indeed, I wasn't suggesting to edit directly from the cards (although that is possible). Backing them up to a drive is a must, and would be my first step regardless of the workflow.

If you do choose to use the ClipBrowser method to wrap the EX media into MXF containers, then I'd advise against the recommended 'Avid AAF' method as it leaves you with no way of relinking media should it go offline... I wrote about it on my website: XDCAM EX Workflow in Avid

xdcam workflow for MC 3.0 using clip browser?

A few months ago I found a work flow on the Avid site about how to import xdcam clips into MC 3.0. I cannot find that pdf file (it looks like the site changed a lot) and couldn´t find this information in the tutorials. Please pass this link or link to appropiate tutorial.

Basically, I am looking for the clip browser settings and if I need to export as MFX for NLE or for Avid, and which is better. There seems to be downsides to both, and I need to know if I can delete files created if I choose to go the MFX for NLE route.

Also, I want to know if I can then remove (not delete, they are backed up on dvds) the mfx files that are then created in another folder

However, when I imported them into the avid, the orriginal name was restored and the "comments" column doesn´t have anything.

Is the option to change the name in browser not for real? Can this be imported into Avid or do I have to manually change the names in Avid once I import them?

I have MC3.0 on Windows. I haven't figured everything out yet. But as I understand it, I should be exporting AAFs in Clip Browser 2, then importing those AAFs in MC3.0 (which point to MXF files placed in your AVID Media Files folders), then transcoding the XDCAM video files to DNxHD145 (virually no loss in quality) so that I can edit efficiently (without the jerkyness of GOP) and then output a quicktime reference (now possible since the video is DNxHD) to eventually make a DVD.

The problem is that if you transcode both video and audio to DNxHD145 (or to DV25 for example because you want to save space, take advantage of your SD MOJO, or not need HD for awhile) you lose the link to the XDCAMs in the Avid. The drag with this is you also lose link with the originals. In other words there is no such thing as batch transcoding as there is with importing or capturing.

Transcoding upon import would solve this I would think. You could import/transcode to DV25 then when you have your sequence you could import/transcode to DNxHD145 for final outputing. Will this be corrected in a future MC or have I got something mixed up?

Thank you
Richard Burman
