I did a test of 8 different settings and present my own conclusions in this tutorial.

My test was done using HDV 1080i source footage.
It is probable, though not certain, that my conclusions may apply to some other formats as well.

When working with HDV 1080i material it is not necessary to use a 3rd party encoder as a "middle-man" in the workflow.
With other formats, a 3rd party encoder may be necessary.

This tutorial can be used to to complement the information contained in my other 6 tutorials on "AMC and DVDitPro HD (AvidDVD)"

I will post a pdf file containing the relevant settings and some other details at a later date.

Hope I help make a little clearing in the jungle for you!

Download the tutorial: Blu-ray Made Easy [PDF]

It covers the following parts:

• How to export from an Avid HD project (in Avid Media Composer)
• How to use Sorenson Squeeze for creating Blu-ray files
• How to burn to Blu-ray using Avid DVD

To burn a Blu-ray DVD you must have the following:

• Avid Xpress Pro 5.6.x / Avid Media Composer 2.6.x or higher
• Avid DVD 5.6 or higher
• [optional] Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 or higher
• A Blu-ray burner (internal or external will work)

Make sure you are using compatible versions of the Avid editing system with Avid DVD (e.g. for Avid Xpress Pro 5.7.x use Avid DVD 5.7 / for Media Composer 2.6.x use Avid DVD 5.6)

Download the tutorial: Blu-ray Made Easy [PDF]

*This tutorial was used with P2 material shot at 1080/24p, from a Panasonic HVX-200. The results may vary with XDCAM HD, HDV, RED files, etc. but the processes should be similar to this tutorial. All feedback is absolutely encouraged, from others who have used different formats for this process.

However I sometimes felt that newcomers like myself needed a much more basic approach to many of the things that were being taken for granted.

The first 20 or so tutorials were specifically made to help migrants from Avid/Pinnacle Liquid. However, many of those contain tips that can be useful to any newcomers.

The two main points that I have learned since arriving here are:

1. Media Composer has many, many ways of achieving a given result. My tutorials usually show only 1 of them. Be flexible and experiment for yourself. Nothing is set in stone.

2. If you are coming from a different NLE family, try and leave your old workflows behind you.
Don't try and figure out how to emulate them in MC.
The sooner you begin to accept the MC way, the sooner you will get up to speed and discover its flexibility.
It took me only 14 days before I completely stopped using Liquid.

SEE ALL THE TUTORIALS HERE on the MEDIA COMPOSER - PC FORUM

The tutorial page is, as the title above says, "Expanding".
Please drop in every now and then to see what has been added!

Hope you find something useful.

Regards,
Douglas

Re: Version of DVDit with MC 2.8?

Jrlcopy,
I think that you are close to the mark there.
I have used both DVDitProHD and AvidDVD, and I have noticed that there seems to be little relationship between the 6.0, 6.x numbers of those products.
The latest versions (6.4) have the ability to write Double layer Blu-Ray discs.
However they have excluded the saving of Blu-Ray projects as Blu-Ray.iso files and now use Blu-Ray.gi files.
Being used to Blu-Ray.iso files I took a little time before I could feel at ease with the Blu-Ray.gi ones.

Discs burn fine but when loaded into a consumer player they act as if playing - the counter progresses for the duration of the file put on disc, but no sound or picture.

Workflow:

1080i HDV sequence in MC 3.0

Transcode media to DNxHD 145

Export QT ref

Import QT ref in Avid DVD by Sonic v5.7

From there, I've tried writting both a Volume and a Disc Image to local drive. Then use Sonic to burn each to a Blu-ray disc. Sonic creates disc succesfully. Try to play disc in Sony BDP-S350 player and no picture or sound but player acts as if it's playing the disc normally.

What am I missing?
