Hi All,

I am attempting to export an AFE of a sequence from Media Composer for Online on a DS.

We are using continuous TC generated by camera for log and capture. A separate time of day TC track is being recorded to Audio track 2. We then use "read audio timecode" to convert this to an auxiliary TC track. This enables us to create EDLs for the sound dept. and so far it's a great system.

My problem is that when I export an AFE or an AAF and bring it into the DS, it reads the Aux TC and goes searching for the wrong code on the tape.

I've tried decomposing the sequence and duplicating the Start TC in to the Aux TC column. I then save the bin and export another AFE, but the DS is still finding the Aux code.

What am I doing wrong?

AAF compatibility between Avid MC and Adobe Premiere Pro

I have done some quick searching to see if there is some way for me to edit on my Media Composer and then deliver the project and media files to my client who would like the option of making revisions in the future on his Adobe Premiere Pro system.

I thought I would share this link from Adobe:

... and ask if anyone has had success doing this on a regular basis. I just ran one test from MC to PPro on my computer and the clips as well as the timeline with video dissolves carried over into Premiere (but the audio dissolves were lost).

I have discovered a really annoying bug and wondered if anyone has seen this or even better fixed it!

When exporting a multicam grouped sequence (ie make a multicam group- edit a multicam sequence) export the sequence as an AAF, (linked to media shows this), re-import the AAF into a new project and while in multicam mode- watch the sequence. You will see that the camera positions flip in the multicam quad.

Has anyone seen / reported this so far and does anyone have any ideas how to stop this happening. (Our workflow brings in a pre-grouped AAF with edited sequence into Avid- and this can't change).

Cheers

I now have both an AAF export and an OMF export with associated wav files. To my knowledge, these projects have been exported from Pro Tools correctly. I have read that the correct way to import an OMF project is to import the .omf file and then manually copy the wav files into Avid's OMFI directory. I have attempted this on a new macbook pro running media composer 3.5 and on a windows machine running media composer 2.8

In both cases, I cannot located an OMFI directory. The only directory that I am aware of is the Avid Media Files folder, which is intended to hold MXF files only. In both cases, I am able to successfully import a timeline and a bin full of sound clips. However, these sound clips do not seem to contain any information (when i load them into the source window, they do not not say "media offline." Rather, the clips play, but I don't get any levels.

I think that the problem arises becasue the wav files have never been imported. I just don't know where to put them so that avid will find them in the database and relink the clips in my bin to the underlying files that were generated from the Pro Tools export.

Has anyone else encoutnered this and found a solution? Any help would be great - thanks!

Working in a MXF/AAF workflow it's possible to have custom metadata populate in the bin. I want the ability to have the information in those custom colums displayed on screen. Just like the timecode can be in the timecode burn-in effect and subtitles can be in the sub-cap effect.

Is this possible? Maybe from a plug-in some one has created?

Basically the recommended workflow with XDCAM EX material, as detailed in tutorials and forum posts here, using the Sony ClipBrowser's "Avid AAF" export method has a serious weakness. Namely lack of Metadata. There simply isn't enough metadat in the clips to allow Avid to relink the media should you ever loose the media files created in the initial export.

Also, given that the clips lack Tape or Disc Label information a manual reconform is very difficult also as there is no easy way to determine which original source card a clip came from, so even if you've backed up the XDCAM EX BPAV folder (as you should) you can't bring a project back online if footage is lost.

The only way to work around this currently is to avoid the 'Avid AAF' export method and instead opt for the 'MXF for NLE' export method which will create OP-1a MXF files that can then be imported as any video or image file would be. The clips then have the necessary information to allow a Batch Import later. But it's a slower process.

Re: Using .aaf & Relinking

Depending on the method you've used to import the XDCAM EX material it may be impossible to relink to anything other than exactly the same Avid media files that he has edited with. I blogged about this very recently (last night actually) - XDCAM EX Workflow in Avid

As I currently don't know a way to work in Avid with XDCAM EX proxies I would assume that he's actually using the full resolution EX media, but simply using Avid Draft display mode when editing.

You need to take a copy of all the XDCAM EX media from his Avid MediaFiles directories and have that on your system. Then you will be able to exchange .avb bin files with no trouble.

This is a limitation with the Metadata created by Sony's ClipBrowser when it creates the OP-Atom media it places in the Avid MediaFiles directory during the 'Avid AAF' export method.

Expand tracks by Timecode with Concert recordings

See the notes under the video…
