I have a 720p 23.976 P2 project in MC 3.5.1. I exported a sequence from that as a QT Ref.

Using TMPGEnc 4.0 Express, I encoded an MPEG-2 Blu-Ray file. The picture and sound came out beautiful, but the sound seems to be delayed and out of sync with the picture. Any ideas there?

These were my TMPGEnc settings: NTSC Blu-ray (BDMV); 1280x720; 16:9; 23.976 fps; VBR; Linear PCM audio.

From MC to Avid DVD - A look at the settings!

In recent months the interest in using AvidDVD to author and produce both DVDs and Blu-Rays has grown quickly.
Unfortunately the jungle of advice being thrown at newcomers seem to have confused them more than helped them.

I did a test of 8 different settings and present my own conclusions in this tutorial.

My test was done using HDV 1080i source footage.
It is probable, though not certain, that my conclusions may apply to some other formats as well.

When working with HDV 1080i material it is not necessary to use a 3rd party encoder as a "middle-man" in the workflow.
With other formats, a 3rd party encoder may be necessary.

This tutorial can be used to to complement the information contained in my other 6 tutorials on "AMC and DVDitPro HD (AvidDVD)"

I will post a pdf file containing the relevant settings and some other details at a later date.

Hope I help make a little clearing in the jungle for you!

However I sometimes felt that newcomers like myself needed a much more basic approach to many of the things that were being taken for granted.

The first 20 or so tutorials were specifically made to help migrants from Avid/Pinnacle Liquid. However, many of those contain tips that can be useful to any newcomers.

The two main points that I have learned since arriving here are:

1. Media Composer has many, many ways of achieving a given result. My tutorials usually show only 1 of them. Be flexible and experiment for yourself. Nothing is set in stone.

2. If you are coming from a different NLE family, try and leave your old workflows behind you.
Don't try and figure out how to emulate them in MC.
The sooner you begin to accept the MC way, the sooner you will get up to speed and discover its flexibility.
It took me only 14 days before I completely stopped using Liquid.

SEE ALL THE TUTORIALS HERE on the MEDIA COMPOSER - PC FORUM

The tutorial page is, as the title above says, "Expanding".
Please drop in every now and then to see what has been added!

Hope you find something useful.

We've deceided that we'll be backing up all the source media (the Avid MXF files) to Blu Ray. This will include the EX footage, as well as the XDCAM HD422 footage.

We've opted for Blu-Ray data discs at this stage.

What we're trying to figure out now is the best way to manage that process. With Blu-Ray discs we're obviously going to quite a few discs at the end of the project, and a restore from those will be difficult without some knowledge of what MXF files relate to what clips.

So we're looking for suggestions about how to best manage this;

- How can we ensure all the media is backed up, ideally only once.
- How can we track what clips are on what discs?

My idea so far (although it's complicated by the fact we're already a number of days into the shooting) is that when we do the XDCAM EX re-wrapping process, we could put each days footage in a different numbered folder in the MXF directory. This would probably work for the EX footage, but the XD HD footage won't be as accommodating.

We could just take files out of the MXF directories and group them by creation date for archiving. Of course we'll end up backing up precomputes and other media we don't care about that way.

I'm also thinking we could use MDV to pull stuff out for backup?

Anyone have any suggestions?

What would be neat would be an application that could open the AVB file, and gather all the MXF media required for the clips in that bin, then we'd backup that bin along with the media it relates to together.

Part 6 - Avid Media Composer + AvidDVD (DVDitPro HD)

This is the last of a 6 part tutorial on how I am using Media Composer along with DVDitPro HD (AVID DVD) to author and burn Blu-Ray disks and DVDs.
