Hi All,

I am attempting to export an AFE of a sequence from Media Composer for Online on a DS.

We are using continuous TC generated by camera for log and capture. A separate time of day TC track is being recorded to Audio track 2. We then use "read audio timecode" to convert this to an auxiliary TC track. This enables us to create EDLs for the sound dept. and so far it's a great system.

My problem is that when I export an AFE or an AAF and bring it into the DS, it reads the Aux TC and goes searching for the wrong code on the tape.

I've tried decomposing the sequence and duplicating the Start TC in to the Aux TC column. I then save the bin and export another AFE, but the DS is still finding the Aux code.

What am I doing wrong?

frame rate conversion on DS v6

HI. Am trying to work out if I can do 25fps to 30 fps conversions in HD. according to the help file I should be able to drag and drop a 25fps seq into a 30 fps seq and audio + video will automatically convert. Seems the audio isnt hapenning though. Anyone had experience?

Re: DPX export with source timecode
My understanding is that DS will only export the Sequence timecode for DPX files.

I believe this is correct but a DPX header reader utility could shine some light on this.

Features and Enhancements

Avid DS 10.2 software also includes a lot of important new features and enhancements. Some examples of these are:

- Advanced conform with a new AVX™2 architecture, making new plug-ins available to DS customers and greatly improving the workflow with Avid® Media Composer® and Avid Symphony® projects.

- Reduce capture time by 2 with Sony® SRW-5800 double speed playback, enabling capture of HD 4:2:2 formats at double the speed when using the SRW-5800 tape deck

- Improved workflow for RED™ projects, including import of audio contained in .r3d clips, the ability to save RED file setting to an RLX file, and support for the RED SDK v1.6.

- New Graphics-Link mode for playback of high-resolution sequences on an external monitor. This provides 10-bit 4:4:4 RGB color-managed display on a computer monitor or external monitor. Improved 2K playback provides true real-time playback on all variants of 2K frame size. This feature requires an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600, FX 4800 or FX 5600 graphics card.

NOTE 1: This feature is supported on the HP Z800 and the HP xw8600 with a qualified graphics card.

It is not supported on other installed base systems.

NOTE 2: This feature requires a new license file.

- HSL Keyer effect enhancements, with improved clipping and softness adjustments to Hue, Saturation and Luminence.

- And a lot more….

For a complete look at the features and enhancements included in Avid DS 10.2, please see the ReadMe document located with the download files or located on the Knowledge Base.

Important Notes:

- The Avid DS Support site has also been updated at http://aviddssupport.avid.com/ in support of Avid DS v10.2. Sylvain rocks!!!!

- This release adds support for the new HP Z800 workstation and many other workflow, timeline and FX enhancements.

- Although Avid will begin shipping DS 10.2 software beginning August 31, 2009, the formallaunch will not occur until the week of September 7, 2009. Web page updates, customer communications and other launch activities will occur at that time.

Happy downloading and upgrading all……

Questions, comments…. post to the list.

Instead, capture the R3D file directly and sync the audio from the QuickTime file.
Is there any way to "trick" the DS into capturing the R3d vido footage in one pass and then the audio from a Proxy file perhaps in another pass? This would give you a clip with audio and video without having to use a "sync" seq to cut from and the load up time whenever you put it into the source window. It is really nice to match back to your sources. We can't be the only people needing audio while doing an offline cut with the R3D files. IS there a DS software solution to come?

I'm trying to figure out what the best way to go about planning for a stereoscopic 3D project might be.

We are in the pre-production stage of a shoot for a six minute live action project and I am working on an Avid DS V10 with the 8400 workstation.

I am in the fortunate position to be able to influence all aspects of the shoot including what camera/workflow to use. But I have absolutely no experience in this format!

Does abybody here have some background in this area? Some support would be highly appreciated since I'd like to make this project go as smoothly and successfully as possible :)

One more detail - the final output will be on a 14X4meter screen - madness.

Re: bad quality of red raw debayer in ds

Storage LUT is not applied to linked R3D clips. It is used for captured clips only and you will likely see no appreciable change in the display unless you use a nonsensical LUT that damages the image. The purpose of this LUT is to accomodate 12 bit linear RGB storage in 10 bits.

The DS viewer (I believe) has an internal sRGB LUT applied which could account for the banding you describe.

I think Speedgrafe is incapable of using GPU for debayering. Currently only Assimilate, Adobe and DVS have native access to REDCODE while everyone else depends on the RED SDK. More information on this subject is available at http://www.hdhead.com/?p=155.

Theoretically, the quality of debayering should be identical on all applications that use the SDK. I am not aware of any comparative tests that would prove this.

I watched the podcast interview with
Frank Capria that was posted on one of the Avid blogs a while back.
From what I gathered, they take all the feature requests....
Hi Carl,

Whoa Nelly! Be a sport and attribute when attribution is due ;-) The interview with Frank you speak of is not on an "Avid blog", it's on HDFilmtools.com: The Network for Aspiring and Professional Digital Filmmakers.

I'm
sure you know with all your dedication administering these boards, it
takes a tremendous amount of work, so show a little love brother! But seriously, I try my best to cover all
manufacturers equally according to both their merits AND shortcomings. I do it for the benefit of the
community and my love of making movies.

Ironically,
I came here today to do some research on purchasing a DS for use on my
next film as I find myself doing much more of my own VFX work, both
temps and 2K finals, in the "offline" stage of editorial. (BTW, primarily in AE). IMO, HD has really changed the game. So from my
personal experience I agree with BMF in that with the introduction of each new
tool, the line between online and offline is blurring. In the smaller markets and boutique shops, it's all but non-existent. I also agree with Terrence from Alpha Dogs that if I'm going to plunk down 50K+ on a system which bills itself as a 2K DI capable tool, the CC functions better be top notch. It's frustrating because the hardware's all there. Avid has an opportunity to annihilate the likes of Color and possibly even SCRATCH by giving DS owners the power to do CC on a par with these more powerful color correction packages.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents FWIW.

Oh, and before I forget. Click here to view the complete interview with Frank!

Best regards, and thanks for helping maintain a great forum!
Lawrence "Larry" Jordan,
HDFilmtools.com

Re: Importing Hi-res graphics and images into DS
I then deleted 9 of the 10 "Graphics on black" clips on the
timeline and re-saved and then you think you would end up
with a sequence filesize of 22MB again. But no, you end up
with a filesize of 198MB, so it's like 220-22=198MB instead.
The other way round you might say? So it's like memory isn't
released the right way when you delete the clip instances.

But if you save with a new name you finally end up with
a sequence filesize of 22MB again.
Hi Mike,

You can't do what you did with any reliability as to the file size of your sequence without doing a "Save As" after every step. The part that you're forgetting is the size of the Undo Stack which increases every time you perform an operation on the Timeline (this is also dependant upon your User Prefs for number of Undo levels).

If you want to make comparative size estimates you MUST do a Save As every time.

Regards,
Tone :)
