I don't have a foolproof diagnosis, but I'm pretty sure it had to do with the video card, possibly a driver corruption. I was having monitor flickering as well, and switched back to an old set of monitors that didn't have a dvi port. After I did that, the error stopped happening. However, the replacement monitor started flickering again
