Or Record it in QuicKeys. I'm using Quickeys X3 and it allows you to map some things that the Avid keyboard doesn't allow (including macro style sequences of actions). The advantage here being that you can colour in a selection of clips with one key press.

Our workaround involved putting all the instances of media that "might" be this media file... if not all files in the same folders into one users media folder on the unity then scanning. Prefereable on all machines that owned databases on that drive. OR Make one machine the owner of all the media folders and put all the media clips into one

You're not hitting CMD-alt-D by any chance. I have this mapped in QUICKEYS for something and it took me while to realise this is the default for hiding/showing the dock. It can be disabled in SYSTEM PREFERENCES->KEYBOARD&MOUSE->KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS
