Re: Archive Compression Format
Isn't tape like $5-$10/each? The hard drive idea is valid, but 250GB does fill up pretty quickly. I know compression is lossy, but how much does it really come out in the editing realm? I did a wmv test of a 1GB file and it ended up as like 55MB. That's way compressed, but it didn't look too bad full-screened. I think it still looked better than vhs

Re: Archive Compression Format
Wouldn't that still require the footage to be on tape? I'm not looking for a way to keep the size down while I'm working on it, but when I'm not working on it. This is stuff that I don't necessarily want to scrap, but I might never use it. Also, I would want to make sure that it's useable on other nle's (most likely vegas). JJ

Archive Compression Format
Hello... I have a bunch of footage that I've been shooting for the last couple of months and while I probably won't do much (if anything) with it, there is some good stuff. Unfortunately, I have like 100GB of my drive wrapped up with it and I want to free up some space. I could buy more 250GB HDD's. Eventually, I could get an external raid tower and

firewire cable length
I was considering capturing from a mini-dv cam directly into xpress (or maybe dv rack or something) via firewire and I was wondering what the max length for the firewire cable should be. I was looking at a 25' cable so that the pc could be at the sound board and then just have the firewire gaff-taped across the floor to the tripod. Is this a big no

Re: capture aborted
I just wanted to mention that I'm having the same problem. I just bought a used Canon Xl1 and I recorded onto a new (I took the wrap off the case) panasonic mini-dv tape. The first capture I did of the tape was with xpress pro 5.2.3 and it gave that error multiple times during the capture. The capture would stop, but the Xl1 would keep playing until

Re: Mpeg streamclip...help.
gazpenk wrote: Hi, can someone please run me through how to convert mpegs into quicktime *.mov files so that i cn import them into avid.....using mpeg streamclip. While not a direct answer to your question... I found converting .mpg to raw dv (.dv) worked quite well with streamclip. You don't have all of the quicktime settings and don't even need quicktime

win2k?
Are there any avid versions that work on win2k? Personally, I never liked xp. Also, as an audio guy, I've never been much up on sp2 as it causes some problems with audio hardware. Honestly, I'd use xpress 3 if I could have multicam and win2k. JJ

Re: Removing Empty Space At End Of Timeline
That was my first thought, but it didn't work. Deleting clips works fine that way, but the empty space didn't. JJ
