I've used Indiestor MIMIQ to do it. Simple, it seems to work pretty well, and the developer has been responsive over the years. Windows/Mac compatible. There is a cost, but it works. https://indiestor.com/product/mimiq/

This appears resolved in 2020.12. Not sure if it was resolved in an earlier version, but AFP shares and MIMIQ seem to be working fine now.

Was there any file in the sequence that had a filename that had any odd characters, especially slashes, backslashes, bars, etc.? Keep in mind – that includes not only the file itself, but also any folder above that file. So if a filename was /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Documents/Media/Avid|Files/Project1/File1.mov, that Avid|Files is probably going

I actually don't know! Different people have different archive needs. Peronally, I like to keep original camera media, any graphics/audio files that were created in other tools so that I can re-import them (such as Photoshop, After Effects, and audio files), and any media captured within Media Composer so that I have those originals as well. You can consolidate or transcode the sequence, and use the options available to you in order to select the length of the handles you want to keep around the used clips. Then, you do a backup of just the media used in the consolidated/transcoded sequence.
Yes, but there is great penalty in performance, especially at higher resoluttions and video tracks, unlike imported video. I wish Avid could improve that workflow, if possible.
I totally agree with this, which is why I hope that part of it improves. But functionally, linking is what you're looking for. That

Traditional Fast Import, or via Link+Consolidate.
The idea is to copy the files to the computer and Media Composer work

This feature of better H.264 export is a VERY welcome, major addition that will save me hours and massive amounts of storage. I'm now able to take a project, begin with all linked material, skip the a consolidate/transcode process entirely, AND go directly to a fairly-fast H.264 export. I no longer have to render and output an entire 1-hour presentation

Testing more, I see that when I disable AFP on the server and use SMB instead, it works fine. So this issue is limited specifically to AFP shares, at least on my server. Post title updated to reflect.

I'm getting an immediate crash in MC 2019.11 on my profile System 1, when I'm in the consolidate/transcode window and click on any network-shared volume. MC immediately vanishes. I am generally using Indiestor MIMIQ to work with those shares as Avid volumes, but even when MIMIQ is disabled and uninstalled, the issue persists. Shares are AFP
