Hello Everyone -
I was curious to know if any new Mac Pro users out there have discoverd an output solution via Avid's Nitirs DX. As I undertand it from past forum discussions, Avid has qualified the Mojo DX with a Thunderbolt adapter, but claims Nitris DX is not supported. Other past posts have claimed some success with Nitris using the Thunderbolt adapter (to Avid's surprise). If the Nitris DX, is indeed, unsupported - has anyone discovered any hardware solutions in mastering to tape via their Nitris box? Is it only a matter of time before a supported Thunderbolt adapter comes along? Or is the Nitris now going to be a legacy piece of hardware (that is, if I would like to continue editing and mastering on the latest Mac Pro)? The Nitris is a rather expensive piece of equipment in our mastering suite. I'd hate to discover that it may be End Of Life, as some have claimed. Any help or past experience would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!
I don't know what will happen with the NitrisDX, but I recently found this: http://www.motu.com/newsitems/motu-thunderbolt-video-io-is-here
I believe it retails at $1195

The official word from Avid is that the NitrisDX will not work, or be supported on the MP2014. There was hope that a Sonnet T-Bolt>PCIe interface would work (Sonnet actually manufactures the Avid adapter that DOES work for the MojoDX), but it's not to be. Avid states that the NitrisDX might work in some situations, but not all, and therefor will not be supported.
To replace the NitrisDXs, we are moving to BMD UltraStudio 4Ks, which via T-Bolt are known to work w/ Avid and the new MP2014s. And as Avid clarified, it's not the NitrisDX that EOL - it's the (lack of PCIe) interface on the MP2014 that's the issue.

Does anyone know what Avid is recommending/certifying for hardware (Nitris DX replacement) on new Apple platform based installations? The Nitris DX was their flagship I/O product. It's a shame they can't rewrite the code to get it to work or come up with a new replacement product.

Very helpful information.
Thanks, Keith!

At NAB the MC demoist said the same 3rd party I/O folks - BMD, AJA, MOTU - are supported on the MP2014 w/ their T-Bolt equipped I/O devices. Avid stated that they have no plans to develop an Avid replacement for the NitrisDX. - sounded like they had devoted some research & resources to come up w/ a way to bridge NitrisDX to the new MP2014, w/out success.
Does anyone know whether closed captioning or ancillary data comes through the BMD or AJA devices. I know that on Symphony v6, this was not the case, but I'm not sure whether this was corrected to work in more recent versions of MC or Symphony.
Ancillary Data - the Data Track - currently only works with the DX hardware. There is a method using the Telestream software for closed captions with a Matrox Device.
An XDCAM OP1a MXF and AS-11 file export will retain the Ancillary Data.

That's a good question. I would include the Universal Mastering feature to that too. I wonder if third party solutions will have the ability to address and implement these features into their I/O boxes.
Yes Bob, the XDCAM OP1a MXF works very well as I have submitted to broadcasters and the captioning information is retained without problem. However, the Nitris DX box is very useful as an output tool for those requiring media, and captioning which is essential these days, works well.
How can we think about using the new MacPro (trashcan, tube, whatever you want to call it) if we cannot output captioning or ancillary data in an efficient manner?
I was talking to a BaseLight representative at the Sony booth at NAB and he was showing their color correction plugin on MC, and it was quite beautiful. That kind of color correction power right within the timeline was impressive. He said something interesting about the new MacPro, "Whatever you may say about the trashcan's problems with expandability and external connectivity, which are real, one has to admit that it is incredibly fast!"
So how do we use this thing properly with MC or Symphony?
