Anyone else notice this - being able to import a QT Ref for scaling of HD to SD used to be an important workflow.
On my setup, I can't seem to import much of anything into Avid FX (using File->Import) - seems that MOV files aren't even in the list of known media types. Of course, you can force the import dialog to see the MOV files but then the import fails telling you that it's not a supported type.
Anyone else?
Steve

Hi Dirk -
Well - Avid MC is 64-bit and still works with QT files - I think there are going to be many disappointed Avid users if it's true that Avid FX 6 does not support QT Reference files - QT Ref files were used with Avid FX in several published workflows (published by Avid users on these forums, that is).

Yes Dirk - I assumed that's what you meant.
Out of curiosity, did Boris consider that not having the ability to import QT Ref into Avid FX is a show-stopper for some Avid users - and do you think that we will see support for QT Ref in the future?
Thanks,

One of the popular uses of the QT Ref workflow with Avid FX is scaling HD footage to SD (pan and scan) which is not possible within MC.
When I want to do something with my MC footage, I typically use Automatic Duck to After Effects - this is the most efficient workflow for me.
I've made a note to folks on the MC forum asking them about this - maybe it's not as big an issue as I would have thought. The problem with not supporting QT Ref is that now we have to use considerable additional disk space to transcode our media into a form that can be imported into Avid FX...
Thanks for getting back to me, Dirk -
Dirk de Jong:I think the impression here was/is that the QT ref workflow was mainly used when doing effects in which the number of desired video inputs exceeds the maximum number accessible to the plugin from the Avid timeline. That max number is 6, so such effects would be the ones requiring 7+ video inputs. Additionally, I suppose it could be a convenient workflow for accessing Avid captured video when using AvidFX as a standalone app. Currently, in the 64 bit Windows plugin/app it is necessary to access "Movie File" media as AVI or Image Sequence.
Hi Dirk
Talking here about QT files in general, not reference files...
As per the other thread on this topic, QT movie files are very important in my workflow where I get QT files from XSI with alpha channels and then combine them in Avid FX. Whilst image sequences are possible, from a legacy pov that wont work. Also, dealing with 20 minute image sequences is a lot of files - a QT DNxHD with alpha is far easier to handle. From our perspective, unless we are able to use QT files again we will stick with Avid MC 5.5 and FX 5.8 which is a pity since the upgrade is bought and ready to go! Any info you can give on a fix timeframe would be great. As you know, AVIs are not liked by MC and are not part of our work flow at all so therefore, also not an option.
Out of interest, was the "look down" bug in FX fixed in this release as per my discussion with you on another thread?
Vote 1 - Dongles.

I checked carefully with others here @ BorisFX to confirm the answer to this question today, and the short answer is that the 64bit products (Boris RED or AvidFX) will not be supporting Quicktime on Windows OS.
I understand well based on your posts to this forum that's not the answer you want to hear, and I hope we can somehow help you come up with an acceptable workflow for using AvidFX.
I believe it would be possible to continue to run AvidFX 5.8 as a standalone on the same machine and continue to work with QT Movs in that context, but the AvidFX plugin for MC 6 (which is 64bit only) will not be supporting QT on Windows.
I suspect QuickTimes days are numbered and even FCP-X is using the new AV foundation.
QT has been tortured for too long it's time it was put out of it's misery.

With this clear message from Dirk there are 2 courses of action available.
1. Stand still where you are and cry. Then start to shout and rant about how this is a show-stopper and how you will not be upgrading to MC6...........
2. Accept that things are changing and begin to look for alternative workflows for the future now!
Doing number 1. will only delay the innevitable.
As I said previously on the topic of QT's demise from AvidFX, "How often does the average user actually need to import a QT or a QT reference file into a Media Track in AvidFX?"Granted there will be a few, but I doubt if there are many.In fact there are a lot of users and dabblers in AvidFX who probably don't even know that you can change the Media tracks content.
I do not think that the end of the world has arrived yet!

QT days are numbered on a QT based NLE?
What are we going to work on?
.avi?
Should our films be 8 minutes long?
Thanks God I don't use Avid FX.

AndrewAction: drbgaijin:I do not think that the end of the world has arrived yet!Well I guess we need to suggest to Avid they replace QT reference's with MXF reference's. Then hope everyone drop kicks Quicktime out of the paddock for ever.
Andrew,
As far as I know, Avid MC can still export QT reference files.IF you need them in another application, they are still available.I use them for AvidDVD.
If you need some clip from MC in AvidFX, why do you need to export it from MC at all?You have it there already.
I am probably missing something obvious here. Please enlighten me...
