I have been using top/tail for a long time.  It is one of my favorite tools and one of the features I miss the most when working in FCP 6/7.

Note that if you have sync locks turned on for all tracks, you only have to light up the track that you want to make the cut from, and the other tracks will get the same cut and therefore will stay in sync.  So while you still have to pay attention to track lights, you don't have to turn them all on to safely use top/tail.

This also means that you can use top/tail on complex timelines, not just for roughcutting simple time lines.
