    Is 5.5 worth it?

I'm considering upgrading from MC 5.0.3 to 5.5 (software-only) but I'd like to hear from 5.5 users as to the improvements made in the upgrade. I'm a freelancer and student working on a very tight budget, and although I'm capable of buying it, I want to make sure it's worth paying $150 for the upgrade. Avid seems to come out with new versions quite often so I'm wondering if it would be better in the long run to just wait for MC6.

Also, what version(s) and bundle(s) of Boris effects come with MC5.5? I'm having a hard time figuring that out.

For me 5.5.2 is better than 5 and ONLY for the reason that the ST tool is fixed.

Captures works for me as never before.

    Even HDV on SD projects.

Are you referring to manipulating transitions in the timeline with the smart tool?

I'm running MC 5.5.2 at home and I'm very happy with it. No significant problems here.

No I am referring to the ST tool behavior which is popping out whenever it wants.

This doesn't exist at 5.5.2. When you disable it stays there in the corner.

I can confirm this. As of 5.5.1 it appears the issue of the smart tool randomly re-enabling itself has been fixed. I have not had one single instance of that occuring since upgrading to 5.5.1 and then to 5.5.2.

    Hi there....

The $149 upgrade is a software download only and therefore doesnt come with any of ther 3rd party app's.  In order to obtain them you would need to buy the physical shipping kit upgrade.  That comes with the 5 app's and includes a lot of new features over 5.0

    Some of the features are:

    1. AVC-I Hardware Codec Module for Nitris DX
    2. AJA I/O Express
    3. PhraseFind Option (Cost extra)
    4. Scriptsync Option ( Cost extra)
    5. Improved Find UI/Functionality
    6. Direct Manipulation of Transitions
    7. Video and Audio Interoperability Improvements
    8. Support for Avid Artist Mix, Transport, and Control hardware
    9. International Character Set Improvements ( ICS)
    10. H.264 Proxy
    11. Send to Playback Audio Mixing/Routing
    12. LongGOP Splicing Improvements
    13. Sony SR Lite 220Mbit SR AMA Plugin(Sample Provider Model

As for the 3rd party app's....

      • Boris Continuum Complete v7 Universal Mac and Windows – Comprehensive library of customizable video filters and transitions
      • Avid FX v5.8.2 Universal Mac and Windows – 2D & 3D compositing, titles, animation and effects
      • Sorenson Squeeze v6.0.4 Universal Mac and PC – Multimedia export with customizable compression templates
      • Avid DVD by Sonic v6.1.1 for PC – Industry leading DVD and Blu-ray authoring
      • SmartSound Sonicfire Pro v5.5.2 Universal Mac and PC

There are more recent updates to Avid DVD and Avid FX on the DL center as well.

      A side note....

If you buy the options ( either Scriptsync or PhraseFind or both ) you get the MC 5.5 software download free.  You wouldnt get the production suite but you would get the editing software.

      Re: Is 5.5 worth it?

      Thanks Marianna! A few questions:

H.264 Proxy - What exactly is this and how is it an improvement? Is this like the H.264 equivalent of a QT ref?

LongGOP Splicing Improvements - Is this just improved performance when editing long-GOP footage?

Avid DVD - You say updates are available on the DL center - If I did not upgrade to 5.5 but wanted to upgrade Avid DVD what would that cost? I have very consistent and very serious stability issues with Avid DVD. It's extremely frustrating, it crashes constantly and operates far slower than my computer is capable of. I contacted support about it and they essentially shrugged and said sorry. I'm hoping a newer version would be more stabile.
