Avid only works with the Type I variant of AVI, which is limited to 2GB.  To get it to be larger than 2GB, you need to use an application that works with AVI Type II.

A common and easy way to do this is to export the video as a QT and then convert it to AVI using some sort of 3rd party encoder/converter.

Very true!  But with so many better options to choose from, why AVI? This is where I actually use Squeeze.  I can create QT .mp4 using mult-pass that is so tiny yet looks perfect.  When I think of AVI I think of those giant cell phones with the 8" antennas that would stand up like a cordless drill.

I don't use Squeeze. I find it very slow for my needs.

    I use TMPGEnc instead.

I am not the one who wants .avi's.

Many local station here use Edius or Matrox and they need the shows on DVD (in that case I am lucky)

and on Matrox codecs as avi. Before I have had trouble because someone else was asking me for

Pinnacle codecs and avi. I have to split the 45' projects to smaller pieces to deliver it...

Telling them that this is better because the files were written better at DVD's that way...

Now some times I don't have time to export and to encode to deliver.

I don't tell them that Avid can't do this because I claim that I work with the best NLE in the world.

You know the one that almost all films are made on. Can't add to that, that I can't deliver

something from it. I split or sometimes I encode...

    Thanks Everyone,

I already have squeeze, so I think I will give it a try.

No, quite untrue.  Because something doesn't do what you want doesn't mean that it has a bug.  The fact that Avid decided not to extend AVI support to type II was a conscious design decision.

Calling it a bug doesn't make it one.

    Indeed.

    Re: Outputting to AVI

I used to think this was a problem for me but not now, it depends on where or what the final ouput is going to be, if it's to encode to mpeg for DVD then just export to qt ref, or just standard qt files.

the other thing I've been doing is exporting to Avid 1.1 this is awesome quality & then encoding to mpeg with either squeeze cinemacraft or procoder, my then exported avid 1.1 files are my masters that I save to external hard drive.

(all of this I do in standard def of course)

What version of Squeeze are you working with?  I have found Squeeze 6.5 to actually transcode pretty quickly, especially compared to older versions of the program.  Haven't tried ver 7 yet, hard to justify the cost for the upgrade right now.

    Re: Outputting to AVI

I find TMPGEnc better and I am satisfied by the quality.

Maybe for others Squeeze is better for some others but I stick with those guys.

Now as for the .avi export anyone can call it what he or she wants but that doesn't

change the fact that this is an unbelievable mistake from Avid as I see it.

A first class NLE must export to anything and to any size...

Saying things like that, makes the program staying behind.

    The same for the mattes.

Before not so much time, some people were arguing around here that AVCHD was a consumer

product but that changed rapidly, so, things also changed the same rapidly and MC has AVCHD support now.

Now by that behavior you are only making MC a worse product not a better one.
