And the new Radeon cards take up 2 slots.  Ugh.

Must think of something clever to go here...

looks like a bad design as far as card slots go, and no Nvidia card option and no USB3

12 Hyper-threaded cores does sound amazing though.  $5k...ouch.

I wish this came out a little bit earlier since we just received our brand new Mac Pro with our NitrisDX last week.

I know this update literally happened hours ago, but any guesses as to whether or not Avid will officially support Mac systems with a Radeon card? It would be extremely frustrating to buy a new Mac Pro and then have to pay to swap out for an Nvidia card.

At one time, I thought that ATI Radeon's were supported on Mac?  I just checked the v5 Sys Req's and the only thing that I could find was "nVidia GeForce".

Risking speculation, could Apple's move to ATI cards be a ploy to prevent Avid from qualifying the new Mac? The new machines will release in August, so I guess we'll see what happens.

the 'no USB 3' is a strong disappointment. For that alone I'm not enticed.  Yet.

Is it not possible to swap the ATI card for NVIDIA or is there some tech problem i am unaware of?

We have to wait and see. Sometimes older cards are not compatible with newer systems until some sort of BIOS or firmware upgrade.

Yep. Lack of USB 3, Blu Ray and the price of SSDs are the reasons I'm in no rush to go tower. All those extra cores mean doodly squad for editing purposes.

those extra cores and the SSD's would hustle along a render session, and allow more real-time HD layers, I bet.

the graphics stuff needs to be nailed down.  We've got a miniature Beta/VHS thing going here...

An incremental upgrade - a bit disappointing that there was no new ground breaking technology. My 1st Generation MacPro has a lot of miles on it, bit it runs MC5 nicely and it still does all I need. I'll keep it for another year or so . . .
