cannot save bin: too many items in bin

We're getting a bad error ever since my company switched to using multigroups from regular groups. The full error:

Bin "TC 715 Locked" has too many items to save.
Bin will not close until 29300 items are moved to another bin or deleted.

We're now having to lock our shows in separate acts and commit mult-cam edits for screening the full show.
I believe the error is caused by large multi-groups that reference thousands of clips (video and backup audio) each. The workaround we have is to commit multi-cam edits, but then we've lost all of our multicam information.
Does anyone of a better workaround or fix?

We're working on Avid MC 4.0.5 with Mojo SDI on xw8600s on unity 4.2.4.

    Thanks,
    Kent

    How large are your bins?

Avid NewsCutter v10.5.4, ISIS 7000 v4.6.1, Interplay 2.7, Interplay Central 1.8 [view my complete system specs]

If I take the one sequence from a 30 MB bin and add it into a bin with a single 30 MB sequence, (so a total of 60 MB), it says TOO_MANY_ITEMS. These sequences are a total of 4 minutes combined and do not have a large number of effects. They reference about 10,000 subclips and 1800 master clips *each*. The Avid error for this bin says to remove 3800 items. Is their an item limit somewhere around 25,000?

    Thanks,

    Kent

Having the same problem here on Media Composer 5.0.4 for Mac. The Avid appears to have a hard item limit of 32767 items. Integer overflow in 2012? Really?

This is killing us on a major sci-fi feature, we're having to mix down all our screeners.

Was there ever a fix for this? Newer version possibly?

I'm experiencing the same problem with a 30 min consolidated sequence on 5.5.2 Dx Nitris and Mac 6.5 software only. Again, lots of groups.

From the bug fixes list with 6.5.2

"Bug Number: UDevC00174607. You received an error message if you tried to save a bin that
contained more than 32766 objects. Now when you try to save a bin with too many objects, you
will receive a dialog that indicates the bin has too many objects. You can choose to save the bin
in a format that cannot be opened in versions of the editor prior to NewsCutter 10.5.2, Media
Composer 6.5.2 or Symphony 6.5.2. Or you can Cancel and divide the bin objects into multiple
bins and then save them if it is necessary to open them in previous versions."

    Excellent news.
