    Re: Essential Tips

    Hi Ed,

working with TMPGEnc 5 (if you got an Nvidia, Cuda enabled card) is a joy to work with.

The times needed for conversion of files, are unbelievable.

It supports exported QT movie files from MC or QT ref (which I don't use but others do).

You can have DVD compliant files as mpeg2 that you just use to Authoring Works or others

(I haven't tested if using the mpeg2 files @Avid DVD re encodes them or not).

Or have H264 for Vimeo/YouTube or whatever in very good quality (set from you).

It can transcode AVCHD files or almost any other format to Avid DV/HD codec

so you can Fast Import them in MC.

I also use it to transcode to Avid DV codec my previous saved files as mpeg2 (when they are SD)

because MC can't AMA link mpeg2 (DVD files) directly.

    Re: Essential Tips

A test I made to illustrate the power of the Cuda:

    1) The file is DSLR (which can be linked by AMA anyway).

    2) The file is imported from the C disk of the laptop and exported to the same disk.

(we all know what that means in terms of speed, however Cuda engine doesn't seem to bother much).

    3) The file is only 2 minutes long but it is HD DSLR @ 40k or more bitrate.

    4) The output is H264 @30k.

I haven't change anything else since the captured framerate was 24p.

    Re: Essential Tips

Thanks George for your advise on the benefits of TEMPENc and the power of Cuda - I am not  a techo person, I have the Quadro FX1800 Graphics card - I assume this card has sufficient Cuda capability ?

Also George - Could you please outline a typical workflow using TEMPenc in conjunction with MC5

Thanks again for all your contributions to this Forum as I am aure this is very much appreciated by Forum members

    Re: Essential Tips

1800 has 48 Cuda Cores and it can do the job fine.

Maybe not as fast as a Quadro/Geforce with more cores but it supports Cuda fine.

The problem is that you need the latest or one of the latest drivers for optimal results.

But MC is qualified for older drivers. Now I use 275.33 at the laptop with no problems at all

running excellent MC 5.5.2. Also MC recognizes the GT540M as hardware being able

to preview effects and BCC Open GL enables those effects also with no problem.

    1) I am editing on MC.

    2) Exporting a QT file (as SAS -same as source) with Avid Codecs checked.

    3) Importing the file at TMPGEnc 5 and produce from there the mpeg2 file for DVD

(sent to Authoring works for DVD or BD needs no additional re encoding but the menu creation)

    or mpeg4 for Vimeo.

    George,

There seem to be some problems with different functions on different Forums.

The problem has been reported and I am sure things will get better.

In the meantime you will have to decide between 1. Fix the edit button or 2. Release MC6 on time! Geeked Stick out tongue

Always look to see if there is an "Edit" button before you post. Then slow down and think before you write......

Edit a timewarp while in chain.

It is very simple but can make editing faster.

Timewarp must be the first in the chain of effects on a clip.

Now if you have multi of them and you want to edit the timewarp.

Click at the clip as many times it need to go to the lower effect (timewarp).

Then if you trim this one the timearp will be trimmed as well.

    Hi Larry

Im just reading the post above about nesting effects.

I have 1 video track and I used the doubleclick method to nest. Based on 1) in your post does this mean the nest (1.1) is underneath the effect I put on the base video track? My original has colour correction. The added nest has noise reduction, that I would want above the colour correct.

If I have this the wrong way round is it possible to re-order? Also struggling with the stepin/out buttons on MC6. They dont seem to do anything.....If the nest dissapears I cant seem to get it back however the effect is still active so its obviously there - just cant get at it......

That is correct. So if you're double clicking, the noise reduction effect would be underneath the color correction effect, and would be constrained by it.

    pt user:
The added nest has noise reduction, that I would want above the colour correct.

    You can either:

    1) ALT drag the noise reduction effect onto the color correction effect.

    or

    2) Apply the noise reduction effect to the clip first, then either "step in" with the arrow keys on the timeline toolbar and add the color correction effect (note the "N1" identifier that tells you what nest layer you are working on). If you prefer, you can (as you've discovered) double click the reduction effect and add the color correction to the 1.1 layer shown. The ".x" nest layers are always underneath the effect on the base video clip. Think of nesting using the arrow keys as a staircase with steps that you walk up and down on.  You only stand on one step at a time. Total number of steps is equal to the total number of effects in the nest.

    pt user:
Also struggling with the stepin/out buttons on MC6. They don't seem to do anything.....If the nest disappears I cant seem to get it back however the effect is still active so its obviously there - just cant get at it......

If you use the step in arrow method, note that you can continue to step in to added effects and the "N" number will increment up to identify which layer of the nest you're working on.

    Hope this helps.

    RTAS Effects edit.

    (Real-Time AudioSuite).

You can have up to 5 RTAS effects on a track.

If you resize the audio tracks (Ctrl+L) you will get the 5 boxes where the effects are represented.

By just single clicking on an effect it opens and you can edit it.

There is no need to right click on the track and open RTAS Tool.

You can also drag the effect (as with any other effect) on a bin and save it for future use.

Multiple Drives Selection on Media Creation Settings.

It's not like I am discovering the world but I do get now what Avid wants to do with multiple drives selection.

I am backing up all of my projects using MDV but they tend to get huge after a while

for the reason they contain effects and renders.

Using another drive for effects and renders does make the backed up archives a lot smaller and lighter

and containing only the essence of the editing like the sequences and the media files.

The only thing will be missing from a future "restore" would be those.

But they could be re rendered.

The huge gain of that is the space of the backed up archives of the MediaFiles.
