how to create another partition without erasing the existing one?

I want to install Final cut on the same computer I already have installed avid. As I do not want to create any conflicts with it, I thought it would be a good idea to install it in a different boot drive with a different mac os x system altogether. This way I can also try the new snow system without danger, and even test the new avid 4. software (when it became compatible ), because I am still using 2.x with 10.4. When I ran the installer it did not see my external esata drives, so I thought I could use another partition on the actual boot drive. But now I can not learn how to do it without erasing the entire disc, deleting my previous and precious avid installation. Can anyone point me to a solution, or telling me to forget it? I searched on the forum because I remembered many post about dual boot solutions, but is it possible to create it once you have already one? Many thanks in advance. Antonio

Well you could also just use "BootCamp Assistant" to create a FAT32 partition on your existing installation, you'll find it in your /Applications/Utilities folder. Then reformat that partition to HFS+ using DiskUtility, and then install the OS of your choice on it.

I would recommend cloning your boot hard drive onto an external drive before repartitionning, in case something goes wrong. You can do that using the excellent - and free - Carbon Copy Cloner.
