We are running a UNITY locally and an avid in a remote location and have a
10M dedicated VPN between the two locations. At present we are copying media
and projects from one location to the other. It would be much better if we
could have the projects on UNITY. I'm thinking 10M connection would be fine
for just projects, they aren't massive projects. So the question is does
this seem like a reasonable plan and if so how do I co connection manager
across a VPN ie ports etc.

Also along similar lines if I wanted the attic to be on the remote machine
rather than unity to save bandwidth is that practical and if so how do I
    change the attic location?

Or is all this a bad idea?

    Thanks

    Nige

    Nigel,

Let me check with the engineers on this one....  no one has ever asked me about VPNing... with Unity.  Seems skechy but let me ask the experts.

can I ask why you think this? This is an uncontended guareteed bandwidth connection, it would be a very neat why of us keeping 2 locations in sync, far syperior and safer to any of the alternatives.

    Thanks

Bad idea, but it would be great experiment. Have you ever tested the actual data throughput on that line? It's one thing to have an average throughput for data, another for streaming high quality video and Avid software in general is highly allergic to any data timeouts...

    Re: Uniy over VPN

My plan isn't to stream the media but just to have the shared projects. The media is mirrored in both locations by slowly synchronising overnight which works fine, About 6 Gigs an hour. So all I want is to be able to access the Unity Projects so no media from unity directly. Plus I was going to have the attic on the local PC so the only time the remote user sends data to the unity is when something is expressly saved.

    Excellent thanks

So all I want is to have access over VPN to the Unity projects, I'm not wanting the media to work. And possibly have the attic on the remote workstation rather than unity to reduce the slow saves.

We are currently getting 6G/hr transfer speed which is 100M/min At typlical project for us is about 25M so it seems like a reasonable thing to do?

    Thanks

You're going to have issues with Bin Locks due to your connection type,  and bin  Version issues because of time discrepancies.

    Re: Uniy over VPN

We've been getting around crashing/lockup issues by having local projects and avoiding shared bins / projects. Seems to have cured a number of issues. Of course we are on Interplay - which does actually work better than shared projects in many ways - once you get your head around it.
