Hi folks,
Just upgraded to MC 4 and was reading about mixing framerates in a sequence. For those of you who have tried this, how do you import material at a different framerate from the project rate? When I try to import, for example, a 1080i59.94 clip into a 1080p23.976 project, Avid converts my clip to match the project rate (and the import takes a long time as it creates the new QT media).
I'm obviously overlooking something obvious. Any help is appreciated.
***edit - BTW - the imported video clip in my test does not have an audio track - does that matter?
Thanks,
Steve
Hi Steve,
As I understand it, if you've got a 59.94 file, you should import it into a bin in a 59.94 project, then open that bin in your 23.976 project, at which point the new Mix & Match feature will apply a source side timewarp effect to adjust the frame rate of the 59.94 clip to match the 23.976 project. The lack of an audio track should make no difference.
Hope that makes sense.
good luck,Carl

That's how it's done, though. You capture/import into a project with a matching framerate, then open that captured/imported footage within any other project (with a different frame rate). It ensures proper metadata handling, sound sync at the correct sample rate, and it also enables you to change the format on any sequence later on.

George, I'll just add my support to both Carl and Job - That is how it is done!

updated to mc/symphony 4.0.2, when importing AMA P2 1080/24PA material the motion adapter sees it as "interpolated field", it does not detect correct cadence.
Project Setting: 1080/23.98
Material: P2 1080/24PA Material imported using AMA.
i have to manually promote the effect and choose 2:3 pulldown and click detect for every single clip on the timeline for proper cadence detection. also, is there a 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal in timewarp instead of the usual 2:3
John
This doesn't sound so good.
You capture at the frame rate or import then you close that project and open a new one and import from where?
From the bins?
sverkalo: import from where? From the bins?
import from where?
The command from the new project is " open bin"

give us the iso files back in Avid Dvd please, no gi files for me
Hi George,
sverkalo:You capture at the frame rate or import then you close that project and open a new one and import from where?
To use the OP as an example, if you want to use a 59.94 clip in a 23.976 project:
Step 1: Create 59.94 project.
Step 2: Import 59.94 file into 59.94 project bin.
Step 3: Create 23.976 project.
Step 4: In 23.976 project, select File > Open Bin.
Step 5: Navigate to bin from Step 2.
Now you can use the 59.94 clip created in Step 2 in your 23.976 project without any transcoding, rendering, mixing down, blah, blah, blah.
If your clip is imported with the incorrect progressive/interlaced filed motion, you can show the column for field motion and/or cadence, right click on either, and change those to be whatever you like.

the bins show 2:3:3:2 pulldown, but when viewed in our monitors, the motion is stuttery unless i upgraded using the procedure i listed in my previous post.
But, in the bin, where you see the cadence, you can right click on the column and change the cadence without promoting the effect. You can do the same to the Field Motion type.
i can only select 2:3:3:2, no other options. i'd also like to verify if it is indeed the C frame is being dropped, or avid is performing 2:3:2:3 pulldown on a 2:3:3:2 clip.
