    Re: MC 4 announced

All I want to know is if MC4 will work with my mac.  I have a 2 X 2.8 Quad-core Intel Xeon machine.  Early 2008 model.

I have 2 GB of 800 MHz ram, I will be updating the memory to around 12 GB soon.

And an ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics card ( I know avid likes the Geforce cards, so I was planning on upgrading to the GeForce 8800 GT card)

Any help would be hot, thanks!

This is what I know of being supported in Mac Workstations, you will have to check with Marianna for any more info than this.

Don't miss Steve Cohen's blog with entry about what's new in 4.0:  http://splicehere.wordpress.com/

One of the most significant features is Transition Preservation which he describes well.

In BETA testing I was totally smitten with the Transition Preservation.  It makes everything so much smoother!

I use that exact MacPro Andy...  it's a Harpertown right... 8-core 2.8ghz?  Mine has 8 gb of RAM though.  I left the ATI card in there and have had no issues whatsoever.  I say juice up the RAM and you'll be fine.

    Re: MC 4 announced

great! thanks Todd.  that really helps. yeah I have the dual 2.8 quad xeon.  I'm gonna juice the ram up soon.  I just bought the 8800 GT on ebay.  Pretty much because the card is discontinued and I'll never know if I need it until it's too late...

It's good to hear that my machine will be able to handle MC4. this is gonna be a great end to my year!  I got my system in March of '08 specifically to learn Avid, Adobe, and FCP.  I haven't updated my Quiicktime or Mac OS X in a while.  I have OS X 10.5.7 and quicktime version 7.6.2.  I wonder if MC4 will be compatible with that.  Also, will it be compatible with Snow Leopard and the latest in QT?

    Hi All,

Im currious about why a Dual Proc Dual Core Machine would be qualified over a Single Proc Quad Core Machine (Nahalem).

Also, if its not "qualifed" even though a Single Proc Quad Core machine isnt qualified, it should still work. the CPUs dont seem to be hit that hard with MC 3.1.

Probably because they have to make some choice as to which configurations they test. Not qualified doesn't mean it won't work. Qualified means they tested the configuration and have concluded that it works.

Since a lot of pro folks are buying the heavy machines (future proof, perhaps for other applications), it makes sense to qualify the heavier machines. IMHO.

Is this true about the RAM? We've always topped off all our Avid Macs with 16GB and lately Ive been asked if this is overkill. MC isnt 64bit right?

No. You get additional RAM for other apps and so the system doesn't rob from the little bit Avid uses.

Odd I dont dare run another app while running MC. Just one of those habits from running other brutes such as Maya and After Effects. Again we load up the boxes with 16GB hoping that someday MC will require. But in the end it just becomes an awesome hand me down e.g render box :)

Try it Eric!  I've routinely got Avid, AE, PS, Soundbooth, Encore, Bitvice, Cleaner, Transmit, Firefox, Preview, Word, Text Edit and QuickTime open and operating behind the scenes all at once.  It's a beautiful blend of productivity!
