I assume that the latest release of Media Composer is not compatible with Leopard

No. The latest version would not be Meridien (this forum). Furthermore, as soon as Avid qualifies a certain version of their software to run on Snow Leopard, you should be able to see that on www.avid.com/mc under System Requirements.
