There is an "educational" version of Avid which is licensed for educational use only. You are not allowed by that license to do any work of a commercial profit making nature, until you upgrade to the full commercial version. The only difference between the two is that the educational version does not have the additional 3rd party plug-in applications.

The leading academic institutions in the US are NYC Film School in New York City, Syracuse University in Upstate New York, and UCLA and USC Film Schools, both in Southern California. There are many others as well, but these are the leading ones.
