AMD processors are not qualified for MC but I've never heard of one not working. It's mostly the videocard, videocard driver version and Quicktime version that cause most of the compatibility problems.

There is an Academic Version of MC available for $295 to students and teachers.

By all means, download the 14 day free trial of MC. This way you can find out whether it will work (at least initially) or not with your current configuration before you spend any additional money.

    Marco:

Also keep in mind that when you enter the world of Avid editing software, you leave the realm of the personal computer and enter the realm of the dedicated workstation. In PC land, that means NO internet, NO automatic updates, NO anti-virus software running at the same time Avid software is running, and NO gaming. This software is some of the most demanding ever written for a desktop environment. It is a memory and resource HOG and will push your computer right to the edge of it's performance and speed limits and beyond. Only load additional software necessary to augment Media Composer, like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Sorenson Squeeze, Avid DVD by Sonic, Blaze Media Pro Converter, etc. Lean and mean is the best way to go for best performance and reliability.

    Larry,

This will be a bit of a highjack, but this thread illustrates very clearly where Avid's academic strategy falls short. Students connect their computers to the internet, have all sorts of other programs loaded, use gaming, not CAD/CAM videocards and often times have budget motherboards and processors. Avid's Media Composer's system requirements aren't going to change that to any significant extent. Students will just use different editing software.

And most also aren't going to utilize the full power of MC. So while the $295 price is an amazing deal, it's not going to attract a sizable amount of students to Avid.

What Avid needs to penetrate the student market is a simpler, less hardware particular offering but still with a Media Composer-like interface: think Liquid meets Xpress Pro.

Avid really needs this product anyway. Now if they are going to move Pinnacle Studio up or try to position MC even further down-market, IDK? I would vote for the first option. MC's interface and operation has some rough edges that direly need smoothing out. But even after all that's done, it's still not a student app. It's a professional tool.

So trying to get students hooked on Avid by using the Pinnacle product is probably the better solution. Still offer the MC student discount for those who want to move up. But Avid needs an Avid identifiable product with forgiving hardware requirements to get students to start using Avid early and in any kind of large numbers.

    Just my $.02

There are enough Avid editors around for the paying jobs available, if students cannot be bothered to learn it then that is fine!

I agree completely. But perhaps the educational administrators can help as well by managing and controlling what additional software is loaded onto educational lab workstations meant to run Avid software and restricting internet access on them as well. For example, students are there to learn a professional skill on those computers, NOT to play video games. Let them goof off and play on their own time and their own computers. I've visited a couple of such labs where the admins and teachers take a complete hands off approach regarding this issue - not good. With all due respect to students, they should not be the ones making these decisions.

Why is it so bad that a student that wants to become a movie editor (that has already used nearly every mainstream other editing programm) is forbidden to use avid? I mean i use those games as fotoage to create videos (to be creative in any kind of way)

I will reinstall windows Vista and install again the trail version of avid.... aswell i was think about buying a 2nd pc as editing full editing pc..... And the younger i am and gettings use to avid the better can the resault be in the future ;)

But i got that there is no student version of avid :)

That's not what I said or meant. IMO, in a school lab environment, students should not be allowed free rein to load any and all software they desire onto a platform running Avid. As I said before, Avid is a resource and memory HOG and severe conflicts can and do arise when gaming software (which is also a resource hog) is installed on an Avid platform. Again, IMO, you should have a separate "Non-Avid" computer (or computers) that are web connected to access gaming software and create whatever graphic needs you have, and then bring them over for import into an Avid platform. And to run whatever additional applications you want to your heart's desire.

If you're a student purchasing and running your own hardware and software, then you will certainly be the one to make those decisions. I would still strongly recommend following the guidelines I posted earlier, to assure that Avid runs cleanly, reliably and relatively error free. We have over 15 Avid computers here at TPC are configured as described and we have had virtually NO serious problems or errors with the individual platforms over several years of operations in a hectic paced, "racing the clock" newsroom. Whatever problems we do have are almost always network related issues.

I don't mean to insult the intelligence or judgement of students. But I do question their level of experience with the "cause and effect" that errors resulting from overloading an Avid workstation with additional applications that have proven already to be conflicted with Avid.
