"Error: File System Busy". Can I still access my bins?

My computer crashed (blue screen of Death) while I was working on a project in Avid XPress DV, and now I cannot open any of the bins I had open at that time, including the one my sequence was in. I get errors saying "file system busy" when I try. I'd been working on this for 3 weeks, have clients waiting for a finished product, and desperately don't want to have to start over again. Is there any way I can gain access to this bin, or the files inside it?

I'm sorry I don't have a specific answer to your problem, but it sounds like it might be a permissions issue of some sort. Perhaps try correcting ownership and permissions. There used to be a document in the Knowledge Base about this. Again, I'm sorry I don't have the link, but it exists. Try searching for "repair permissions" or some such thing.

You could also try creating a new project and opening the bins from within the other project. Maybe there's a setting that got corrupted in the crash, or something.

If you want, try zipping up just the bin file and and email it to another editor and see if they can get it to open on their Avid and send it back. I'm sort of slammed, but you can try sending it to me at conleec (at) yahoo dot com. I just don't want to promise that I'll be able to get to it, because my schedule is unpredictable at the moment. But if I can, I will...

Here is the link Chris talked about [LINK] which would be my first attempt either.

Also you can try to recover the latest backup of your bin(s) from the Attic, a description how to do this should be found in the manual or the help file.

After looking further into the error message, I discovered the actual reason for the problem. It said the domain header was not an avid supported type (or something like that). As it turns out, Avid hadn't installed properly, and that seems to be the reason for all the issues, and why it crashed in the first place. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and things seem to be going all right now. Thank you very much for your help. It's good to know that there are people out there who are taking time out of their busy schedules to help fellow Avid users.

Yes Congratulations finding the reason why your system stopped working properly! I wouldn't have thought of a install that went wrong in the first place since I understood your first post like "I worked successfully for three weeks on that system and all out of a sudden it stopped working". Anyway, glad you are up and editing again.
