yes, wonderful sunny morning here in Sweden.
If you are worried about the file size with 1:1 , try with Andrews suggestion as you have done and see if you have the " little endian " option for your audio
Tomas
give us the iso files back in Avid Dvd please, no gi files for me
The idea is just to convert your WMV into a QT Avid format - storage is cheap, don't sweat file size. You want to go directly to an Avid codec, 720x480 sounds like the source is NTSC, so you'll probably need to encode to Avid 1:1 (NTSC) @ 30fps (or 29.97 etc). Check to make sure your aspect ratio is correct - sounds like somebody's encoded the wmv directly with no aspect ratio conversion, so you shouldn't have to touch it on the way back unless the source file is flagged incorrectly as square pixels. If they play back in the right aspect in WMP then they are fine.
Audio should embed in the QT and that should then fast import into Avid. Probably make sure you set QT target in Sorenson to whatever your project sample rate is (normally 48KHz these days). Once in Avid and on a media drive you can trash the original Quicktimes (you can always recreate them from the wmv's if required).
You could use FFDShow or QTRef to save space, but I'd suggest a direct transcode is less likely to throw up problems and may in fact be quicker. If space is a real issue look at other Avid codecs, like 2:1 or 3:1 or NTSC DV codec which is only 25Mb/s. They'll all be on your editing system or you can download the Avid Codec LE package from the website or install off the Avid disc.
You needn't worry about data rates as they are inherent in the codec eg 1:1 = uncompressed 2:1 = compressed to half the data rate. Audio should be Little Endian uncompressed etc.. (which is a fancy name for .wav and .aiff formats encoding pattern)
Mondo
Thanks Mondo and mjolnarn!
I'll try 1:1
Client's event crew fortunately requested uncompressed QT for projection, NOT WMVs!
So it'll be QT in, QT out.
I just hope a laptop at the event can handle uncompressed QTs.
You're right Mondo, storage is cheap, though I don't have your 8 TB yet!
Just got back on the Avid, trying to figure out the audio (lack of) situation.
Thank you my friends in Sweden, New Zealand, UK and Australia!
...EVERY Picture Tells A Story... Don't It?
You´re most welcome, nice to have been able to help.
Lets hope that your customers knows what they are doing ?? when they are hoping to be able to play an uncompressed qt file from a laptop in realtime, you will of course give them some test samples and also make sure that you get payed for doing all the testing together with them.
Seriously, i think that you should keep the speed of the file well below 20 mbps to be sure that it plays well, maybe the origin 8 mbps would be a good reference speed.
I had a disc presentation once, standard dvd disc, and the customer had hired a screen and a projector to show it. Once I came to the place, without having anything else with me than the disc, the computer to play it on showed up to be a 10 year old 386, it wasn´t able to even play a 7 mbps dvd disc in realtime.
The big luck for me was that I also had included some wmv files in a folder on the disc with a speed of 512 kbps so the evening ended up in happiness anyhow.
Good luck and happy editing and testing
mjolnarn,
It turns out they will be using a DVR/DDR for playback of the uncompressed QT.
Yes, I too have had the DVD/Laptop nightmare, and this with a new, fast one.
I'm still working on the QT/audio problem.
Thanks!

Most welcome - my 8TB is a Unity. so that is not so cheap :), but I can buy a 2TB eSata drive for around $600 or $700 Aussie dollars. I just remember how expensive it used to be...
Btw:
MediaInfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net) is a very capable OpenSource tool to get almost any information you'd like to know about a audio/video file. It's a real lifesaver if you have to deal with avi/wmv files from all kinds of sources.
not a pro, just a teacher...
Hey folks,
STILL looking for Sonic Cinemaster MCE audio codec to convert WMV>QT>Avid.
Google didn't turn up much, found this:
fullversionrelease.com
Site seems games/movies oriented, how do you know you can trust a download???
Any thoughts, suggestions???
Could you publish a file for downloading, remember to make a rar or zip of it first.
Sorry Tomas, I'm not sure what you're asking.
A file of what?
thanks,
Chuck
grovechuck: A file of what?
One of your wmv files, converted to zip or rar

Is that the audio codec they used in the wmv's ? I wouldn't think so as wmvs generally use wma audio. This may be a decoder already installed on your system. I thought you said they were supplying QT's so a little confused now. I will post my wmv to QT Avid setting's for Sorenson for you. If it is a stock standard wmv, it should just work.

and download the zipped file there - there is an example Squeeze project in PAL as well as Avid audience presets (which you can import in Squeeze) using Avid packed codec for PAL and NTSC. I don't use NTSC so I set it to 720x486 but I believe some codecs use 720x480 - not sure which is right.
Even though you don't have the source file for the sorenson project it should work substituting your own source wmv.
I have tested it and audio works fine.
Good luck
Tomas, thanks, but unfortunately I've never zipped a file.
How does one do that? (Sorry, I'm a moron!)
Mondo, Yes that's the audio codec.
The video is not WMV video codec, something else (I'm not at my Avid).
The audio codec is Sonic Cinemaster MCE.
They gave me WMVs from a Sony camcorder.
I'm converting them to QTs to edit in Avid.
Then I'm giving them QTs for projection.
The video DOES convert to QT in Sorenson.
The audio will not convert.
The WMVs play audio and video in Windows Player.
They play in the Sorenson player also.
Sorry if I wasn't clear.
From SQUEEZE:
"Unfortunately, squeeze only works with codecs that are working on your computer. Sony notoriously created a slew of short lived and difficult to find "collectors items" codecs that can make a project like yours particularly difficult. My best advice is to look on forums for a place where this codec exists and try installing it. As much as i would like to have squeeze be a solution to this problem it is limited by this codec and not the software."
Thank you guys and thanks for your patience!

As always, google is your friend
Thanks Tomas!
