What version of MC? You might need an upgrade! Version of QT?

Thank you for your prompt response!!! My version is Media composer 2.8. OT I believe is 7..
A friend said I may have to defrag drive?? make sense to you?
NEVER EVER defrag any of your media drives! Avid deliberately breaks files into fragments which it spreads across a drive, partition, or RAID drive array, hence the "Initializing Media Streams Manager" stage of the boot up. According to the version matrix, you should be running Quicktime version 7.3 and NVIDIA graphics card driver 91.85. Please confirm.

Confirmed. wow.. ok I didnt attempt that process. So I will download 7.3. however, the Nvidia card driver is appropricate for the my card? 8400MGS. im working off XP in which I downgraded from Vista using capitable drivers because most manufacturers stop [producing the drivers for XP with the newer laptops...
So shall I install the Nvidia card driver?
now that im double checking i do have QT 7.3!! what shall i do now about the error playback?
this project has to show tomorrow :(. i dont know what im going to do
OK, there's a problem. The 8400MGS is a GE Force card, and on the PC side of Avid, a Quadro is required. Although, some users have found a way to force a GE to emulate a Quadro. But in any event, you need to run the EXACT driver and QT versions that Avid specifies for your version of MC, which are NOT necessarily the newest. So install the driver version indicated in the version matrix.
And for your reference, here are the system requirements for Media Composer.
Here are the standard things to do when encountering these types of problems.
1) Is the problem only occurring in a specific project, but not others, or a newly created project? If so, the "(Project Name)settings.avs" file may be corrupted. Go into the specific project folder and delete that file. On re-launch the system will detect the missing file and build a new one.
2) Rebuild the site settings files, they may have become corrupted. To do this, quit the app, and from the settings folder, delete the following: MC State, Site_Settings, Site_Attributes. On re-launch, the system will detect the missing files and build new ones. If you have previously dragged any user settings into the site settings window, those will need to be restored after the rebuild.
3) Create a new user profile and see if the problem persists. It is not uncommon for corrupted user files to create bizarre problems in the interface.
And if none of the above help, you can try re-cycling the power on all your hardware and your Sony deck, then do a batch re-capture of your clips again.
Thank you Larry for the informative answers. I am fully aware of Avid required Specs, however, I dont meet half of them due to unaffordale reasoning at the time of purchasing my system.
I will download the appropiate drivers, however, I could not get 7.3 I realized I have 7.5 according to the version file that read on one of the QT installs. When searching for JUST 7.3 it keeps bringing me back to the newest QT version 7.62..
I will attempt to delete settings files etc. And to answer your questions, No this hasnt happen to any projects ever since cutting ont his laptop for 2 years. Always p2 footage and goes smoothly. And yes this is a NEw Created project. An edit hasnt started yet just the digitizing process. Will report back with update. thanks again.
You can download 7.3 from here.
Also, it may be simply a "play pipe" issue. Try powering everything down, then power up only your laptop - leaving the deck off. Does that work better?
The deck uses a lot of your computer's resources when it's on, even though it may not be "doing anything". That could be causing your issue.

Good point, Kenton. Please do as he suggests.
actually guys sorry for the misunderstanding but Im NOT using a Sony deck. I digged footaged right from the Sony HVR-Z1U cam. Yesterday. AL files are deleted as suggested. Im about to install the other QT version and card and lets see what happens. You know I have 3.0 I never upgraded due to being in between projects all the time. Maybe I should go with 3.0 uh?
