As I said before, I'm very pro dongle. I have several Adobe programs and I can tell you that activation isn't all it's cracked up to be. Only advantage on Adobe is that they let you install on 3 machines at once, as long as you only use one at a time. Don't know how they know..or if they really care, but.....I'll still take the dongle. I just keep it tucked away safely tied down to my cart whan I transport and have never (knock on wood) had a problem.
Dripping? Boy, when this forum starts working right again, I'm gonna have a lot of spell checking to do!

That's what I like about the google toolbar, at least on IE 7. Spell check for all field entries like this one.

Wouldn't have mattered, Larry; Todd spelled "dripping" correctly. :)

It would be nice to be able to keep using the dongle. Activation isn't that great, I've had problems re-installing Adobe on new OS installs with the activiation not working, having to e-mail Adobe, wait for them to get back to me, all while not being able to work. I prefer a dongle over activation.

yep! I DID spell check first. just didn't read!
Activations is better than dongle IF it works right.
Don't take Adobe's example which is the worse.
If Avid makes what Marianna, Todd and others are doing SO right there will be no problem.
If someone stoles my PC (as I have that bitter experience before a year, icluding my whole equipment...)
and Avid knows who I am, they will certainly help me out a lot more easier than with a dongle.
One thing I told the golden girl of Avid is I am unsure what is happening with cloning the drive with OS an MC 3.5.
This thing I am doing for some years now with Liquid.
Installing a fresh install and OS and MC and AFTER activating I get an image Acronis.
In this case I don't know hiw it will work. I tend to format many many times a year when something goes wrong and going back with Acronis to my fresh install.
Now if Avid uses Microsoft tie with mobo activation, then it will be no problem.
Because if it's working differently (I can't think how) and I format I have to remember to deactivate.
And If I forget I am in troubles. But I don't think this is the case. Right?

BLKDOG: Eliminating them cuts a certain amount of overhead for Avid. Personally, I prefer the cheaper software to the dongles.

I like cheaper software as much as the next person. I do not however want to pay $10 (or whatever... $75? for an iLok) less for "cheaper" software just so it can cost me far more (for my valuable time) to maintain my right to freely use the software inline with the terms accepted when I purchase and install that "cheap" software.
Thanks for the continued dongle support

I though we we keeping our edit platforms OFF the internet and without virus protection so they ran better...
And I dont remember reading the hundreds or requests on the "Features" forum regarding dropping the dongle altogether. I like the choice - please keep that choice into v4.
XSI activation for a machine off the net was a nightmare - mind you it needed a constantly active internet connection which is not the case here I think.
Vote 1 - Dongles.

And what if your cpmputer has a bad crash and you can not unauthorize the computer? But need to use your media drives on another computer.. oh wait, YOU CAN'T!!
or can you?
What then?? What would happen in that case?
Thanks
How are the media drives related to the software license? Or, moving them to another computer?
Meanwhile, in the event of a HDD crash, you'd need to phone Avid to do a manual "Deactivate". Hopefully they're available 24x7 without a Support Contract.

I'm also highly in favour of keeping the choice. Personally I am reassured in knowing that I can switch machines whenever I need to if one fails, I just move the dongle, equally when I'm switching between a desktop and a laptop. There is certainly a place for the software licensing system, but I sincerely hope that the option to keep the dongle will persist.
