Avid Press Stories and News  - Week 1/26/09 – 2/6/09

DV Magazine, NL Technology unveils two software solutions for XDCAM Avid workflow http://www.dv.com/articlenews/77836

     -         New software solutions (SAU AI Autoingest 3.1 and SAT AI Solo 1.1) create additional production workflows for a range of Avid applications and Sony’s XDCAM HD

     -        “We’re simply trying to make the ingesting and editing process faster, more streamlined and easier. These applications can take the MXF files off the XDCAM blue laser drives and convert them to the Avid format. It also grabs all of the XML metadata, puts it in each clip and checks it all into the Avid system, so the Avid gets all the metadata, not just two or three pieces. And all hands-free for the editor.” - Richard Laws, vice president of software development at NL Technology

    -         “This new type of workflow is perfect for news or reality TV production, or any application where a lot of footage needs to be reviewed and edited in a short amount of time.  These can be ideal solutions for streamlining the ingest process.” - Kaori Uno, XDCAM applications manager for Sony Electronics

Editors Guild, The Eastwood sanction  https://www.editorsguild.com/Magazine.cfm?ArticleID=683

    -         “I just think that when you get people that are really good at their jobs, it’s tough to look beyond.  Joel is totally on the ball, and a loyal person to work with.  He’s taken me from the Moviola to the KEM and finally to the Avid––and he always keeps up on technology.” – Clint Eastwood

Electronic Musician, Amp-modeling software and vintage amps go head-to-head http://emusician.com/tutorials/showdown-clubhouse-amp-software/index.html

Mike Levine (executive editor and senior media producer) puts modelers to the test against the real amps within a Digidesign Pro Tools 8 session:

    -         “As for favorite sounds, Paul Orofino picked the one played through Digidesign Eleven, which D. James Goodwin thought was a little more open sounding than the others. Pete Moshay also chose that as his favorite.”

    -         “In total, the panelists were able to tell the real amp from the modelers only 38.5 percent of the time. Although this wasn't a huge sample, I think it's fairly safe to conclude that given the right conditions, modelers can sound as good as the amps they emulate. The fact that these panelists, who work with amped guitar sounds virtually every day, couldn't distinguish the amps from the modelers in so many instances presents a very strong case in favor of amp modelers.”

    -         “Although vintage-amp aficionados might disagree, my take-away from the day was that modelers are not the second-class substitutes for actual amps that they're often portrayed as being. Rather, they're an excellent alternative that can often sound just as good as the amps they emulate. And, of course, modelers give you a choice of many different amp tones and cabinet configurations, are much cheaper (not to mention lighter) than real amps, come with tons of built-in effects, allow you total recall, and often have automatable parameters. Sure, there are times when nothing beats a vintage amp. But according to what I observed in the testing session, that's certainly not a hard-and-fast rule.”

Keyboard Magazine, Don’t call her a piano chick: Amanda Palmer on Ben Folds, songwriting and why classical training sucks http://www.keyboardmag.com/article/dont-call-her/Jan-09/91545

Broadcast Engineering, Pro audio manufacturers show off new gear at NAMM           http://broadcastengineering.com/news/pro-audio-manufacturers-show-gear-namm-0125/index.html

BE’s NAMM recap mentions show exhibitors:

    -         “Digidesign showed off its new Pro Tools 8 recording system, including new LE versions, and introduced Mix Rack , a piece of expansion hardware for its Venue mixing console that combines all I/O and DSP into an 11RU box.”

Editors Guild, Klaatu Barada Nik-2: Making the Earth stand still – again. https://www.editorsguild.com/Magazine.cfm?ArticleID=684

    -         “I put all the material into the scripts system and work with that.  It’s a great time-saver, a great organizational tool.” – Editor Wayne Wahrman, A.C.E

    -         “Scripter ScriptSync is a program that not a lot of editors use.  Once you see it, you realize that it’s great.  It can be a pain in the butt for assistants because it takes a long time to organize it.  But it’s especially good when you’re sitting with the director.  He can say, ‘I want to hear every line reading on that line,’ and you can show it to him super-easily.” - Catherine Haight, First Assistant Editor

    -         “We set up the Avid project as 24fps, but found we really needed 23.98.  Something like making a DVD really took a long time.  We found that if we exported the QuickTimes, and then ran it through Compressor in Final Cut, we would get everything the right size and frame rate.  Then we could burn it to DVD.”

Editors Guild, Change lists we can believe in (Avid’s FilmScribe)https://www.editorsguild.com/Magazine.cfm?ArticleID=688

    -         Assistant Editor Justin Bourret provides step-by-step guide for using Avid’s change list tool FilmScribe

Troubleshooting stars – Sound techs to the rescue https://www.editorsguild.com/Magazine.cfm?ArticleID=685

    -         “It’s always been a job with a rather loose structure, which is good because with the advent of ProTools, a lot of jobs that were never within the bounds of the back room personnel now come into play… It’s all about taking what the editors are handing you and pushing it through to the mixers so they have all their material the way they want it.” – Keith Culbertson, Sound One on sound editing
