    Blu-ray Best Practices

We're all used to DVD and know exactly what we need to do to make the best disc possible, but now Blu-ray's here. And I for one am just guessing as what I should do.

Do many people have enough experience with this format yet to say what the best approach is? We've all of a sudden got a lot more choice than we did with DVD. So to begin with, I have a few questions...

    • Which codec is best? If space isn't an issue, is it worth sticking to MPEG2, or will H264 or VC1 be better regardless?

    • For HD, what's the optimum resolution & framerate? If my source is 720p25 (which my Blu-ray MPEG2 encoder doesn't seem to have an option for), should I encode at 720p50, or is it worth upscaling to 1080p25 before I encode?

    • As with DVD, should I do 2 pass VBR for the best quality or will CBR at the max bitrate be better?

And I haven't even got to the menu side of things yet...

I'm keen to hear what people's experiences are so far - hopefully we can collate some knowledge in this thread on the best approach to this mysterious new world most of us are going to have to adapt to.
