"media not available" Mysteriously in Training Edition

I've been using the Training Edition to try to get my head around DS and its features. In theory, the Training Edition is a WONDERFUL idea. And when it works, I feel blessed to have such an amazing piece of software on my computer for free.

But many times when I open a project, the record window with the sequence loaded dispalys "media not available." The timeline says the same thing. Usually the audio will be there. So I can hear but can't see the sequence play.

What is odd is I may open the exact same project a day later, and all the video is there in the sequence.

The media was imported from a file, so it's not a conform issue from another Avid app. And the source clip is still in one of the project folders.

I can add the source clip to a new sequence, but the cycle starts all over again. The next day there is an excellent chance I will see "media not available."

    Any thoughts? Thanks MUCH.

    media not available

    Hi Bobby,

    1. Is your pc always connected to a network?

    2. Does your Administrator account have a password?

    3. What is your storage configuration?  Is your Videostorage folder on the C drive, or elsewhere?

    4. When the media is missing, take a look at Processes in Task manager and see if UMMDS is running - if it isn't, then you have either a network disconnection, or another problem with the configuration such as no Administrator password.

Let us know how you get on,
    Regards,
    Tone :)

Re: "media not available" Mysteriously in Training Edition

I believe I fixed it by turning off Window's Simple File Sharing--apparently it grants Guest status to DS even though DS needs full access to be able to work properly.

But I'll answer your ?'s also, as they're probably relevant to having a good configuration.

    1. Is your pc always connected to a network? Yes. The pc is one of two computers both connected to a router. A Windows network links them so I can share files and a printer.

    2. Does your Administrator account have a password? I logon on as a user with administrator privileges, but I don't logon as "Adminstrator." I do use a password.

    3. What is your storage configuration?... DS is installed on C:. DS projects are on D:. Videostorage and Audiostorage are both on F:.

C: and D: are separate 7,200 IDE drives. F: and G: (which I don't use with DS) are 10,000 RPM Raptors. All drives are standalone, no RAID. I have Window's Indexing Service disabled on all drives. I've heard it is not very useful and don't believe disabling it affects DS or AXP (or any other programs).

    4. ... take a look at Processes in Task manager and see if UMMDS is running... UMMDS.exe is not running and neither are Consumermgrs.exe or SLDP.exe. AvidSDMService.exe is running. (It's part of Xpress Pro. I've been told it can be safely disabled, but have left it set to Automatic.)

I'm somewhat concerned that the service you mentioned isn't running, but DS seems to be working okay.

BTW, your suggestion led me to doing a web search on UMMDS, which led me to the info about turning off Simple File Sharing.

So thanks much for all your help!

Yep, that's documented.  Any 'grown up' application that shares files doesn't need (or indeed want) that service running.

Perhaps it doesn't matter with the Training Edition, but for a 'real' DS the Administrator account MUST have a password for the services to run reliably, whatever account you actually use to log on with yourself.

    BobbyMurcerFan:
UMMDS.exe is not running and neither are Consumermgrs.exe

Again, this may be different on the Training Edition.  If it works, then no worries :)
