    Graphics Card and Processor upgrade

     Hi,

This may be slightly off topic annd if it is I opologise in advance.

Having recently upgraded to MC V3.0 and been using it on my laptop I feel it is time to bring my workstation in line with  current requirements.

I am contemplating getting an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and  an NVIDIA Quadra FX1700 graphics card.

My question is simple, I guess there are no problems simply taking out tyhe old graphics card and replacing it with the new one but I am not so sure about thye processor. Is it as simple, whip out tyhe P4 and put in the new one? or are there problems with the mother board or anything.

I appreciate any advice as I am not that clude up when it comes to CPUs and how they work annd stripping them down.

    Thanks again

Re: Graphics Card and Processor upgrade

I haven't upgraded graphic card for a long while, but it should work (I would uninstall the graphicdrivers first and then install them again when the card is switched)

The CPU I don't think would work. If it's the system in your specs - then it has to be a socket 478 CPU (pentium 4/celron)

Graphics cards are easy to replace. It is very similar to installing a sound card, firewire, etc. Uninstall drivers, shutdown and remove from system. Place new card, boot up and install drivers.

For CPU - it will not work. You need a motherboard that will support the new CPU. Your current motherboard will not. Additional cost starts around $120.

Your motherboard has an AGP slot for the video card, is the FX1700 available for AGP?

Re: Graphics Card and Processor upgrade

     Thanks for your advice guys.

V2.8 is working fine on my system so I may leave it as it is for now. Seems it will cost a fair bit to bring it up to spec and that has started me thinking about buying a new unit probably HP 8600,  especially as I will want to add one of the DS boxes at some point.

    Thanks again, much appreciated.

Re: Graphics Card and Processor upgrade

I've heard that too but would not know for sure. I am or rather was looking at replacing the graphics card on my desktop workstation tower unit type thing and not my laptop which is currently all specked to MC 3 requirements.Smile
