I recently purchased 2.8 MC and tried to update to 2.8.3 which failed, but I was at least able to uninstall and go back to previous version. The update to 3.0 has completely destroyed my system, because of an issue with the 8800GT video card. I'm not going into any details here as I now have too much work ahead of me to try and restore my system, but just suffice it to say that if you are using teh 880GT card you may want to reconsider updating to 3.0. jUST DO A SEARCH FOR 8800gt AND YOU WILL SEE THE PROBLEMS PEOPLE ARE HAVING.

Hi,
Or you could also look at the system requirements which specify the Quadro FX line of cards. The GeForce cards aren't supported.
good luck,Carl

Part of the problem might be that Xpress Pro (and MC 2.8) were much more forgiving (compatible) with other graphics cards in the system. Many people (such as myself) who are upgrading from XP or an older version of MC were probably caught a bit (a lot) off guard by the new requirements.
Fortunately I have a desktop machine that I can upgrade easily - those with laptops may be out of luck.
If I missed it in all of the pre-release chatter, my bad - but it may have been worthwhile to have an official email notification going out that the new requirements aren't "suggestions", but are absolute requirements.
I do have a bit of an issue in that the drivers fail/crash with a system error when Avid is launched on a system without a QuadroFX card. This should NEVER happen - it only takes a tiny bit of programming to validate a video card when the application starts - if the correct model isn't found, a proper dialog box explaining the problem and a clean application shutdown would be the way I'd do it...

That is in itself not a bad idea .. the problem is there are way to many variables for such a thing. Take your 8800 that card comes in at least 30 different flavors .. then we have drivers also many many version and chipsets.. so if they are going to implement such a thing MC would be a great error reporter but a very bad performing editor
Upgrading does what it says.. you are upgrading which means that the product is altered.. that in itself should ping you (as user in general) to look at the specs and see if you are still able to run it.
Then it is up to you to decide to gamble it works or get up to spec. Updates should not make you upgrade anything.. upgrades do ..
Have you got it working with the Quadro trick btw?

What is the Quadro trick?
You mean this?
Baklap:Without violating any NDA i can not tell that much but i can tell you the Geforce series are less and less compatible. My 8800 started playing nice only after i "tricked" the system to believe it was a Quadro 4600 card. On Vista i needed to alter a specific setting in my Geforce 7600 card (from hardware to openGL specs) to get playing video. As said before the new architecture of Avid combined with the PCI-E (as in Mojo en Nitris DX) depend heavily on sharing valuable resources amongst many stuff like CPU, GPU and whatever RAM for instance. Yes modding it into a quadro card.. well sort of
Yes. Thanks. Installed 3.0 at work today. Everything seems fine...

Silly me.. I guess that's why they always refer to them as "System Requirements"
