Re: New Media Composer 3.0 now available...

    Attn: Studio owners:

According to the Media Composer 3.0 readme:

"Pro Tools LE has been qualified for interoperability with the editing application but cannot coexist on the same system as the editing application."

Fwiw... I have read at least two articles where the new CEO has made it clear that compatibility among the editor and Pro Tools is a high priority. Hopefully, the driver issues will be fixed in an upcoming release.

     Hi Adman

Not being very bright here, but does that mean as a Studio user I should wait until the Pro Tools LE problem is fixed before I get Composer 3 or is there a workaround.  When it says it shouldn't be on the same system does that mean the same computer?  I was about to buy Composer 2.8 which apparently is fully functional with Studio Complete.

    What's your view?

Yes, that does mean that Pro Tools LE and the 002 should not be on the same computer. The two computers can be networked together and share files. The one thing to remember, if they do get it to be on the same system, 002 cannot work with MC 3.0, because of the upgrade path for MC 3.0 does not include the new Digi003. So, if they do fix the system sharing issue, you can use ProTools and the 002 separately from MC 3.0.

Re: New Media Composer 3.0 now available...

It is a driver issue. Media Composer actually does work with the 002... I have it working fine on my end. But, you cannot have Pro Tools LE installed on the same computer as Media Composer because the drivers are apparently not compatible.

In the past, the readme's have said this, but in reality many have gotten them to work (including me)... but, at least for me... not this time unfortunately.

If you need both you'll need to buy another computer for Pro Tools unfortunately. All the other components of Studio are compatible though and always have been -- since Studio is the same as Studio Toolkit (sans Pro Tools) which has been available for Media Composer all along...

What about a dual boot system?

As ever Adman you are a fount of knowledge.

Can you go back one step to MC 2.8.  Did this work with Studio Complete without a hitch?

Will Avid still sell it ?

What would we be missing (apart from frustration)?

    Thanx

Re: New Media Composer 3.0 now available...

The upgrade is for the current version 3.0. The only way to get 2.8, afain, is to try calling a vendor such as VideoGuys and ask them if they have MC 2.8 versions available for upgrading... (maybe they still have some in stock, I have no idea.).

Actually, if you upgrade to 3.0, you are entitled to download any of the older releases from the download center.

Re: New Media Composer 3.0 now available...

Ok.. here is the official scoop according to Avid (Marianna)...

The only real viable option here is to find a retail box upgrade to MC 2.8. This is because Avid doesn't support dongle updaters for past versions. So, if you go with 3.0 (via required dongle updater)-- running 2.8 would not be officially qualified or supported by Avid.

The other issue is that there is a limited time period for getting the 3.0 upgrade free (from 2.8 purchase or upgrade after 3/17) -- and this version (as I noted) requires a dongle updater which is not reverse compatible in terms of licensing and support.

So... the best option is just to go ahead with 3.0 and do a dual boot for Pro Tools and/or put Pro Tools on another computer on your network...

    I hope this is clear.
