As for your question.....

Avid Media Composer v3.0 was tested and qualified on Vista Business. So other versions of Vista, like Vista Ultimate are not officially supported. It may be that the software “just works” on these other versions but, because it hasn’t been tested, I don’t actually know.  better to stay safe and go wth what has been qualified.

It's available right now. If you are eligible for a free upgrade (i.e. you have an assurance contact or purchased after March 17th) then the dongle updater on the DL center will work for you. If not, then you have to purchase the upgrade and an updater will be sent.

Then you need to go to avid.com/protection and follow the prompts...

 Also, Marianna - just FYI after my 3 hour download (satellite), I went to unzip the file and it said it had errors and could not be unzipped. So I'm now downloading a second time (with about 2 hours to go).

Another 3 hours downloading 3.0 -- with the same result. The zip file is 0.98MB both times (with no reported errors downloading) and hangs mid-way unzipping, saying there's an error in the file - which appears to be the DIO and/or the protools bits. I'll try again later, bypassing my wifi router. FYI I tried unzipping on different computers (one XP and one Vista) with effectively the same results.

I'm getting ready to upgrade, but i'd really like to know how much i'm going to get dinged for "assurance" in order to be able to download updates etc..I couldn't find it on
 the Store, or anywhere in the knowledge base etc...

... especially since there is supposedly a limited time 15% discount available on a single or multi-year contract.   The only published pricing available for Assurance I can find is for  DigiDesign products (ProTools and HW audio capture/control surfaces etc.) with the single exception of the $199 single call Avid telephone support access "package".   You also have to purchase at the same time you buy the software in order to get the discount.

So here is the tirple problem:  you have no idea what Assurance costs;  You can't order the "hard" package version (DVD with 3rd party apps) because it is out of stock; and even if you wanted to, you can't get the hard package and the Assurance at the same time because the Avid store does not offer purchase of Avid Assurance contracts (only Digi Assurance contracts that do not cover Avid products, according the the store's Web sight.)

BTW, the only way to even see the update options are to select the "> Avid Media Composer" bullet at the upper left of the store page under the "VIdeo Editing Systems" heading.  You can purchase the download options; it's just the physical delivery option that is "out of stock" and unorderable.

I take it that once you've attempted / made the update to 3.0, you can't downgrade to 2.8.x again should things not work so well?

I am not sure if you can or cant go back again....I couldn't...but......

Goddess Marianna saved the day.  Within a very short while of my posting, she called me up and marshalled the Avid forces to rectify the problems that I faced.  Even though it was after hours for both my reseller and Avid, Goddess Marianna got the job done, and I was back up and running within an hour of her call.  Amazing amazing support from a company that takes a lot of ^%#%#% from its own user base and its competitors. With Marianna and Jeff Ayer's responsiveness to my problem, I just don't know how you can do better that that.  No one likes problems, but the attention and care shown me was amazing.
