It is possible to direct enter or Cue to frame while working in frame display mode. This seems to work fine for me when displaying time code, but I find it easier to reference frames when logging events and dialog externally in Excel. I have events that I want to navigate to directly in my footage, but the refernces I recorded are all in frames.
Huh? Could you be a little more descriptive please (You aren't using the common Avid terminology)?
Are you trying to type in a TC number in the S/R monitors? Frame Mode (Typically) refers to a Bin display mode.

Sorry for the confusion but these are the help sections in the online manual that deal with what I am trying to do.
>Finding Frame and Clips:Basics>Cueing to a Frame with Timecode
It describes entering a timecode with the numeric keypad with into a text box in the middle of the monitor
It is also described in my 700 page manual for DV and AXP on page 450 under the heading
Using Timecode to Find a Frame
In the "Tracking Information Menu" above the monitors where time information is displayed you can choose between TC1 which is common time code format or FRM which displays frame numbers as in integer.
I want use this feature while working in FRM display mode (which has advantages for me while logging since I use voice recognition software that understands integer numbers). I have not had sucess entering a FRM value like 4001 and moving directly to that frame.
Since I posted the question I wrote a formula to convert the frame numbers in my spreadsheet like 4001 to time numbers like 0:01:04 which are second accurate but not frame accurate. It seems that Avid should accept either input depending on the mode I am displaying in my monitor view.
I See, what you are referring to is not "Frame Mode" But "Displaying Frames" in the S/R monitor.
What you can do is use the first row of info to display your frames and the second to display the TC. Then, when you click on the monitor and type in TC, the system will jump the the position you request.
If you would like the keypad entry to accept FRAMES rather than SMPTE code, after you type in the number of frames, hit the "F" key and the system will advance by frames.
Thanks for the advice. Displaying the timecode window with both FRAMES and SMPTE has eliminated switching the S/R time back and forth, but I just wanted to confirm that it is NOT possible to directly navigate to a specific frame (for example typing 4694 [Enter]) into the S/R window while the S/R time is displaying frames. I understand you can move forward and back by typing frame values.
Sorry no, the frame values are absolute values and not specific. For instance, it calculates + or - frames. Not the exact frame number.
I'd love to know what output you are using to log that displays a running frame count though.
If you do this with Film, I'd understand but then you would be looking at edge code and not TC.
