new 24p Project, old 30i or 30p footage

    Hey guys,

I am starting a new project that is being acquired in 24p. We will need to bring in some older footage that is 30I and some that is 30p!

We will be outputting to DVD with a digibeta master and want to hold the option open for a possible film print.

What are my best options for dealing with this challenge? Do a pull down of the 30i?  what about the 30p?

    Thanks

Re: new 24p Project, old 30i or 30p footage

You're going to have to lose 1 out of every 5 frames when you use 30i material in a 24p project.  Utilizing either a software or hardware conversion will smooth the motion by blending the existing frames when converting to the slower frame rate.  One solution would be to capture 30i by capturing it as if it was 24p and live with the motion judder until you finish and the convert the final material using either a Teranex or Snell & Wilcox hardware box (or something similar) or by doing it in software.  There is a software solution that uses Avid's Fluid Motion (Media Composer) can be found on the 24p.com site

If you opt for a 30p master (actually 59.94i you won't have any judder issues but outputting to film will be compromised because the 3:2 pulldown of the 24p material on the master won't be consistent.  If you do decide to go this way don't shoot 24p Advanced pulldown!  It's not possible to remove the Advanced Pulldown unless it's done during the original capture.

Must think of something clever to go here...
