I first posted this issue a long time ago and still have not resolved it. I was pretty sure the upgrade to 1.8 would solve it, but it did not. Also, I seem to be the only person having this problem, as I have not seen a similar post in any forum, Avid, Sony or otherwise.
Here we go...Avid Symphony Nitris v1.8/1080psf
Intermittently, when outputting to an SR5500, the first frame of an edit is gray. For instance, if the edit is supposed to be frames: ABCD(1234)EFGH with frames 1234 representing the edit, I end up with ABCD(Gray)234EFGH. All frames of the edit are correct, but the first frame is replaced with a gray frame.
The pertinent deck settings are:
005 Input
007 PB Sync OFF
306 Sync ACCURATE
630 TC Convert OFF
A05 Lock 1
A10 TC Sense LINE/24
Here comes the really strange part. If I throw some random media on an upper layer and insert that, there is no gray frame. ALSO, if I then try to insert the original shot...NO GRAY FRAME!!! Then if I try to re-insert the original material...GRAY FRAME. Once I put the random media back in, the gray frame disappears again and I can re-insert the correct media.
Can anyone out there help???
This has been an ongoing problem since SN first came out, only in HD 23.98 projects for me, just set the pre-roll to 7 or 8 seconds and do the insert. It might take a couple of attempts but eventually it will be a clean insert. In rare instances where it still adds the gray frame start your insert on the previous cut point. Annoying but has always worked for me.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I was really starting to worry that no one had seen this before! What do you feel is the cause of this problem: the SR Template, the deck itself or the Nitris? Just wondering. I know when we run the SR's under edit control on an Axial, we have a really hard time locking them up to edit.
I'm not sure but i do know this has never happened to us when we're working in HD 59.94, HD 25/50, or SD, only HD 23.98, and only with the SR deck, the hd-cam decks are fine.
for now i just accept this and always always always check the first frame of the insert once it goes to tape. After a couple of tries it's almost always a clean insert.
Maybe some AVID people have more insight into this
Cheers, Steve
PS Axials? are they still around? That was my last linear editor before switching to non-linear
pretty sweet controller at the time! (10 years ago)
