    Kernel Panics?

Got a client running 8-core MacPro's (667mhz ram) that's veen getting a lot of Kernel Panics. I saw this recently at one other site that had the same machines, and it was caused by energy saver pref being left at the default... when the OS would wake back up it would kernel panic... after setting to never - no more panics. IS THIS SOMETHING NEW WITH THE 8-core's?

Anyone else seeing more Kernel panics lately? Both Customers were running MC 2.8/OS10.4.11... Dual Boot Internal Drives... One with FCP/OS10.4.11 the other as mentioned... the FCP drive is NOT kernel panicking... BOTH systems on Unity. However, one is Unity 4.2.3, the other 5.0.1...

    Any Ideas? TIA Joe

    Re: Kernel Panics?

There is a current bug with Unity 5.x and MXF files that causes Kernel panics. OMF is fine, though.

    Could that be it?

    Re: Kernel Panics?

We are having Multiple Kernel Panics in all 5 of this clients dual boot Avid/FCP 8-Core MacPro's on Unity 4.2.4

(One thing to note is that it really seems to happen when the system is idle.)

When this first started happening - I had just seen this problem being caused by the Energy Saver Pref and Expansion Slot Utility not being set correctly. I also thought it might be RAM related. However, we swapped the RAM from the spare Mac and it still Kernel panicked. (Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC2-5 667Mhz) and we had made sure the prefs and slot utility were all correct as well.

We then thought it might be related to the AJA HD I/O, so we pulled it from the system.

I also disconnected the systems from the Unity. Still Panic.

I now thought there must be some type of software conflict causing these Panics. They had ALL kinds of stuff on there, Font Reserve, etc...  and I noticed in the Mac Console that it was complaining about a Font. So, using the OS disks - I Erased the FCP drive on Edit4, installed only FCP, OS 10.4.11 and Unity 4.2.3 and told him to beat on it for a little while. Not sure how badly he did, but he says after about a week or so of use, no Panics. GREAT!

So, I came in and happily erased manually (using the OS Disks) all the Avid Partitions, thinking that they would need them first, Then I wanted to manually rebuild the FCP partitions as well...

It was getting Late though... so I only got to the point where I had ONLY OS 10.4.11 loaded on 3 machines and figured I'd come back in the morning. Left the machines up and running seeing that they all seem to panic when's nothing's going on.

This Morning. PANIC! IT Panicked with ONLY the OS loaded, no other software - nothing.

(IT'S NOT SCREEN SAVER EITHER, BTW.. happens sometimes when it comes on... but also just sitting idlly at desjtop)

LASTLY - I'VE REMOVED ALMOST EVERYTHING FROM EDIT2.

LEFT ONLY THE FCP INTERNAL. NOAVID INTERNAL, OR MEDIA INTERNAL.

NO FIBRE, CARD OR SIIG 800/400 FW CARD.

NOTHING CONNECTED AT ALL EXCEPT MONITORS AND USB.

IF IT PANICS NOW - WE SHOULD ELIMINATE THE USB AND MONITOR EXTENDERS NEXT, AND OR RENT AN EXACT WORKING MAC WITH FIBRE AND UNITY INSTALLED.

(if it doesn't well than I will incrementally add hardware back.)

BTW - I wanted to run the HARDWARE System Test, but couldn't find the Separate Disk. (Realizing Just today that they now include it on the OS Install disk - Just boot from the disk holding the "H" key. Ran it on two rooms - both Passed!!!!

YEAH, I'M PULLING MY HAIR OUT!!

    THANKS,

    JOE

(BTW, ALL PARTITIONS HAVE BEEN ERASED AND STILL PANIC)

SO AT THIS POINT I AM GUESSING IT IS RAM RELATED OR A BAD RUN OF CPU'S...

HOWEVER, HAS ANYONE HAD ANY SIMILAR ISSUES?

    Re: Kernel Panics?

You say that all 5 MacPros continue to crash with only the OS loaded...is that right?

Is the unity connected with the Client software not on the system? What is the ATTO card? What Slot is it in? Have you pulled it to see if  the system crashes without it?
