the only maintenance we currently do on our Unity is ASM the drives once a month...we do opt and Synch every so often, but not regularly...is there any benefit for doing this say once a week, twice a month?  what do you think?

Joe, i also optimize any time i delete a large workspace, say 100 or so gigs.  Im running two workgroups, so if i delete it from say workgroup 1, ill only optimize that workgroup. 

Also my ACSR once told me that in the monitor tool, where you can look at drive usage, you will see the drive space available on each drive.  Mine normally show a .8 or .7 after them.  He said that when you start to  see them start to waver, say .7, .6, .8 etc... on different drives, its a good time to optimize.  If you look at them all after you preform an optimize, they should all match, say .8 just to say.
