Hi i just installed Avid Express Pro on my PC, after a few error messages that i found out how to fix i came across this one.
An ACCESS_VIOLANTION exception occured. For more information see the error log: C: /program Files/Avid/Avid Xpress Pro/Avid FatalErrorReports/Exception_2008.05.02.20.27.56
How do you go about actually fixing this problem
I wouldn't have the faintest idea.
However if you post your system details someone here might be able to help. Post them giving details of your CPU, firewire card, display card and driver, memory size, version of Windows, Avid version, version of Quicktime, as completely as you can.
Then tell us the nature of the "few error messages" that you "found out how to fix". They may also give a clue as to what has gone wrong. It's likely that you didn't really fix an underlying problem that has led to this latest issue.
As a long-time Avid user with more Avid installs on home-built systems behind me than I care to count, if you're using Avid preferred hardware and software this should not happen.
the prior post was correct about giving us your system specs, but in Windows a gotcha with this can be rights oriented.
check the security on all of the drives containing an OMFI MediaFiles folder. I usually do it at the drive level I guess, but that folder would probably work too. You need full rights to that folder - in fact, if the situation allows i'd just give your username and everyone full rights. also, go into advanced and make sure you are the 'owner' of the drive.
that might help...another thing you can do is disable inheritance so that this stuff doesn't change on you. also force it to apply to all subfolders, etc.

Good answwr above. I took mine back to my reseller once with a similar problem - it was a permissions thing as suggested. Think its a right click on a drive and analyse SECURITY AND PERMISSIONS.
As suggested, keep it all simple and very low security on everything for Avid. This should not be an issue if you dont have the Avid boot part of the PC hooked up to the internet.

My only concern about suggesting looking at permissions is that Robbiez has already worked around a couple of other problems. It would be unfortunate if he sorted out his permissions but had uncorrected problems that left him with a mysteriously flaky system. And we all know that can happen all too easily.
Access Violations Basics:
1) You must be running Windows XP Pro, not Home
2) Make sure "Use Simple File Sharing" is turned off (unchecked) in ...
Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > (last item in list)
