Wary of upgrading my dongle mid-job (MC Upgrade) - REASURRE ME!!!

JUst bought the MC upgrade, but the upgrade info sheet says it is for XPress Pro PRE 5.6 to MC 2.7.  My Xpress vers is 5.6.6 so really this isnt PRE 5.6, it is POST it!  The disk itself says I actually have Vers 2.8, so it IS wrong about this already...

There is NO WAY I want to be screwing up my dongle mid job, but I bought MC as this job started on XPress will LOVE Timewarp for the closing section.  So:

Is it a bad idea to import my projects to a new MC (only) setup on the PC (and will they slide straight in with the ext FW media).  My thinking is that it all works fine...

Secondly should I be concerned abut the dongle update?

I'm not too concerned about about hardware compatibility (as my experience suggests otherwise), but if i DO need to roll it back to Xpress, can I do that after the dongle update?

    Thanks

    D (in limbo, drooling ;) )

Original DIY PC: Shuttle SN85, AMD 3200, 1Gig Ram, Quadro 980, on board sound, on board firewire, 2 x SATA + WD ext HDD - could that be less 'compatible? Never hiccuped once! :-)

Upgrading your dongle make no difference to the dongles backward compatability.

If you are worried about your current project then upgrade to 2.8. Open a new project and import the bins you need from the old project. I would duplicate the sequences I needed into new bins in the new project. Enjoy timewarp in the closing.

    Yes.

Great - thanks for the re-assurance.  The dongle will still be good for the Xpress (which I will keep on this laptop) and will have a stab at the MC on the PC :)

Does it 'flash' the dongle - have no idea how it all works and will keep working with a different product.s..

For reassurance I just pulled my 2.8 dongle and put it on a Pro 5.6.4 and Pro worked straight off.

My understanding is that Avid Dongles are all backwardly and downward compatible (MC back to Pro)

Thanks Andrew - reassurance doesnt get better than that! Much better than educated guesses :)

Re: Wary of upgrading my dongle mid-job (MC Upgrade) - REASURRE ME!!!

Ok - thanks for your help so far chaps.  I have now uninstalled Xpress and installed MC.  I now need to go online with my dongle in and get the dongle updater.exe .  HOWEVER I do not access the internet from my Avid boot as it sensibly doesnt run anti virus software (I DID briefly and stupidly access internet a week ago for 5' just to check a quick important gmail and, despite having firewall and a firewalled modem router I got a ravmon virus that has screwed up right click on drives for all my PC's...).

SO, i can conect to the internet from my other boot, but this doesnt seemingly recognise the dongle or have MC installed...

I cant be alone here in clearly not surfing via my editing boot - has anyone had the same problem in upgrading a dongle?

If you have a problem I think it may be elsewhere.

You can download the updater to any CPU. (I have never downloaded a Dongle updater to the CPU with Avid installed on it)

From your Avid install boot open the Avid Dongle dumper and print out a dump of your dongle for the serial numbers you need for the update.

Andrew's totally right.  I do all my Avid updates from a Linux box.  There's absolutely no issue.  Just download the updater you'll be emailed, put it on a thumb drive and plug it into your Avid.  Bingo.

I had no problem - read my stats! Spectramatte is amazing!!! Even better and easier ti use than Keylight in After Effects and I have After Effects CS3. However, I would never upgrade mid-project; that's a caveat that has been passed on through these forums time and time again....

I believe this is a fallacy. Always having multiple current projects at any time I have upgraded mid project since the 90's without a problem.

    Hi,

If you search the forums for "anti virus" you'll get some good suggestions of how to protect your Avid system without screwing anything up.  There was a discussion about this in the last 3 months or so.

    good luck,

Re: Wary of upgrading my dongle mid-job (MC Upgrade) - REASURRE ME!!!

True, I have upgraded during mid-project -because I'm completely ansy- without problems but I would say the rule of thumb is "insurance for assurance." You never know what plugins, or system drivers may not work, and if you have a 30 minute project full of Third party plugins that worked before, but may hiccup now, well, I feel the caveat may apply...it was just a suggestions if he was feeling unsure; and no one should ever feel unsure or unprepared  - especially with deadlines and/or mid-project.

LIke with MC 3.0. I'll definitely  buy the upgrade, but install it? With my current system specs? Probably not, since I have a ton of projects to complete, and I rather read the forums after a few weeks to see the issues, or if anyone is runnnig it with my similar specs.

Probably just have to build a new system - a money caveat:)!

Re: Wary of upgrading my dongle mid-job (MC Upgrade) - REASURRE ME!!!

Guys - thanks for the valuable feedback.  Great to know I can update the dongle (guess it gets flashed??) on any PC.  I really want to keep the Avid boot free of junk and cookies etc etc

I really need timewarp for this project (3D modles and flybys - will look fab with speed ramps:) ) so I need to upgrade to MC at this video storyboard level before I sart cutting proper.  I think the update mid complex projects would be for the brave - esp where 3d party plugins are involved.

Is abyone running MC on a Quadro 980?  I ask as PayPal have stufed my Quadro 1500 purchase by sending seller an useless '2 weeks to clear' e-cheque (whatever that is...as I have my debit card linked to the account).  Grrrr!!!

Re: Wary of upgrading my dongle mid-job (MC Upgrade) - REASURRE ME!!!

While it certainly isn't IDEAL to upgrade in the middle of a project, the reality is that we're often working on several things at once and the overlap makes it almost impossible to find a hole where you're not doing anything.

That being said, because of several reasons, upgrading MC is easy:

    - The dongle updater is always backwards-compaible, so if you step back your dongle is fine.

    - You can always uninstall new software and re-install the old.

    - Any hardware firmware flashes will be undone if you degrade your software.

    - Avid bins aren't version specific, so you can create a new project in another version, copy your bins and away you go.

Now, if you create a sequence with a bunch of effects that aren't in the older version you may run into trouble if you downgrade.  but hopefully you'll run into any problems early and downgrade before you get too far.

And, of course, make sure you backup your project files before upgrading!
