Stuff I've encountered on the fora. Would be nice if NAB visitors or Avid staff could clarify:
1. Does Nitris DX do 4:4:4? Is it perhaps capable of doing this in the future?
2. What's the difference between 'old' Nitris and Nitris DX? In other words: what would be the main incentive for Symphony Nitris owners to upgrade their Nitris to a DX, if any?
3. What are the exact differences between Symphony and MC, and does anyone feel they justify over 14K US$?
4a. Why is Adrenaline not mentioned on the Qualified Systems list for Media Composer, whereas Mojo and Mojo SDI are specified?
4b Will MC3 run on Adrenaline?
5. Is it true that Mojo DX on a dual dual Xeon 8400 will give you no DNxHD capture, as suggested on the Qualified Systems list for Media Composer, whereas you can do DNxHD with Nitris DX on such a computer?
Some remarks, not meant to whine, but as constructive criticism:
Since the launch of "New Thinking" Avid now needs to be very clear on what the different boxes actually do.
For example: Symphony Nitris DX supposedly has more RT power than the 'old' Nitris. Is that a software enhancement (that also improves performance for current SN owners), or is it in the hardware?
If someone is currently running Mojo SDI, and doesn't have any need for HD, is there any benefit (performance or feature wise) in going for Mojo DX?
If Mojo DX is just an I/O card, be honest about it.
When the trade-ins are announced, a lot of this stuff has to be really clear from the get go.
For example, someone who purchased a qualified XW8400 dual dual with MC 2.7 and Mojo-SDI, it seems that upgrading to Mojo DX will not allow DNxHD capture. Replacing the workstation for a dual quad would be nearly the same cost as going Nitris DX, which apparently does allow DNxHD capture on that same workstation.
It would also help if Avid made a little more fuss about the new MC3 features, even the less sexy ones. If any, but I assume there are.
I'll take a stab at a few of these...
Job ter Burg: 1. Does Nitris DX do 4:4:4? Is it perhaps capable of doing this in the future?
A. No, 4:2:2
b. Who knows...?
Job ter Burg:3. What are the exact differences between Symphony and MC, and does anyone feel they justify over 14K US$?
Most of this can be found on the product pages. More CC capabilities, more inter-format operability
Job ter Burg: 4a. Why is Adrenaline not mentioned on the Qualified Systems list for Media Composer, whereas Mojo and Mojo SDI are specified?
Typo
Job ter Burg:4b Will MC3 run on Adrenaline?
Yes.
Job ter Burg:5. Is it true that Mojo DX on a dual dual Xeon 8400 will give you no DNxHD capture, as suggested on the Qualified Systems list for Media Composer, whereas you can do DNxHD with Nitris DX on such a computer?
That is my understanding. The Nitris does the DnXHD for you while the Mojo will depend on CPU speed for DNxHD encoding.
Job ter Burg:Since the launch of "New Thinking" Avid now needs to be very clear on what the different boxes actually do.
They will be. Just give it more than the two days everyone is at NAB.
Job ter Burg:For example: Symphony Nitris DX supposedly has more RT power than the 'old' Nitris. Is that a software enhancement (that also improves performance for current SN owners), or is it in the hardware?
The way it was explained to me, it's Both. Nitris acceleration and software to take advantage of it.
Job ter Burg:If someone is currently running Mojo SDI, and doesn't have any need for HD, is there any benefit (performance or feature wise) in going for Mojo DX?
Nope
Job ter Burg:It would also help if Avid made a little more fuss about the new MC3 features, even the less sexy ones. If any, but I assume there are.
You will see more "Fuss" as they get closer to release. Those of us testing it are still getting through the software itself. Give it some time. As Avid draws closer to release of these products, there will be much more communication. Including a web page dedicated to just the new products. There are many more events planned across the US (HAve no idea about Europe) to answer questions and I know that we'll be able to get folks to come here and answer questions when they get back in the office next week
I'm going to try to see if I can get somebody out of meetings to answer some before then too but no promises.

Marianna,
No need to rush. Just tried to summarize some of the questions I had myself and some that I encountered on the different fora.
BLKDOG:b. Who knows...?
Avid should know. It would require dual link HD-SDI. Whether that is or is not present and can or cannot be implemented, it needs to be clear. Even if the answer is: "MC & Sympony will not do 4:4:4, but the DS on Nitris DX might eventually."
BLKDOG:Just give it more than the two days everyone is at NAB.
I have no problem waiting. I'm not trying to be impatient. I did not mean to imply these question needed an answer within X amount of time. I just post the questions when I have them. I think that's the beauty of a forum, people asking and answering when they have the time. I'm actually trying to be helpful, believe it or not, and your reply (in this thread and another) seems to suggest I should wait asking questions, because they might not be answered straight away. That seems odd to me.
BLKDOG:You will see more "Fuss" as they get closer to release.
So not all features are currently known, even though it has been officially announced? Then that should be clearly communicated.
BLKDOG:Give it some time.
Sure, I'll give it all the time that is needed.
Please don't feel rushed in any way. I'm merely responding to the announcements, as they reach me, and the discussions as I read them. If I were at NAB, this is what I would be asking, so now I'm posting it here.
Andy
Hi Brick,
The Avid events were Sunday and Monday. Most of the rest of the week is customer meetings. If I hear from Marianna, I'll see if she has any other options for you.
