The error message:

Assertion Failed : m_state = = ReadyforRead File: \cores\ame\mstate\DIDReader:c, Line:4887

Avid shuts down.  Apparently caused after splice in of motion fx clip, and adding dissolve, then render. 

Especially when using the L play key.  Sometimes won't cause it using the monitor play button.  If I use L key down the time line, no problem, or way up the line, no problem, but anywhere in the clip or the clip before, bammo.

Repeatedly dumped all settings, and then repeatedly building all my settings again.  Rebooted many times.  Reinstalled MC 2.8.  Searched forums, internet.
