    jvc hdv cameras and MC

Hi- I've got an copy of media composer and am looking to upgrade from xpress pro. I'm also looking at buying an HD camera, and after previously rejecting the jvc prohd option (I'd prefer a 2/3"- or even 1/2" chip- I have one good canon Sd lens I'd like to be able to use, and I've had... nasty experiences with a jvc dv deck), I've shot some footage with one and am quite impressed.

Obviously never going to be able to edit it in x-pro- but will MC now edit jvc's hdv1 720p 25 or 50? If I could encode it to DNx36 it would be perfect for most of what I'm doing.

    TIA!

(ps- I did search the forum... all I found were old posts saying it couldn't be done. I'm hoping now it can!)

The current version of Avid products do not work well with JVC's implementation of HDV in 720/25.  This support has been slated for then next release.  You should have more information after NAB next week.

    Supposedly in the next release.

As for buying JVC cameras or decks.... after buying it in the early days (25 years back), getting burned  and latterly warning and then watching others suffer similar disasters a fool and their money is the first thing that sprang to mind.

My JVC dealer has been a friend for a long time. He does not dispute my opinion, just does not repeat it in public.

I'm not a cheer-leader for jvc, Andrew (so you're telling me you haven't even started that job, because the br-dv600 ate your tape AGAIN!) but I think you're a little too harsh. I'm running New Zealands entire fleet of D9 gear, and it's been reliable enough- and very good pictures.

I don't love the GY-HD100 series of cameras. But the university already has two. I've used them a little, and the pictures are nice- cut well with the sony dxc-35's pics (it's got a D9 back). Then you factor in the price- which is crazily low, really. (Ok, it probably needs to be. To tempt poor suckers back into the shark-infested water!)

I'm not keen on the xdcam format- and the price jump is big. Looking at panasonic's hvx-555, which looks a lot better on paper. But I've heard some unhappiness with that as well. Sigh. At least I'd be able to edit the footage.

And here was me thinking I was being very restrained. The opinion offered is based on multiple experiences over many years.

Loosing the restraint now. If they gave me the camera AND paid me the asking price to take it, I might as I need a reason to visit the local landfill.

"ProHD"- reliability: not terrific, but from the info I can glean, not dreadful either (you clearly have access to a different set of information!). Pictures-  acceptable. HDV1 codec/720p 25 - not well accepted or easily able to be edited.

But really, I was just making a fairly safe bet that you've never encountered D9/DigitalS. It's pretty good. It's been reliable. Never took off in NZ, but very similar quality to digibeta.
